Not what I expected

While I believe I learned a few good ideas from reading this book, It is definitely not a "guide" I would recommend to others. The author occasionally shares opinions (for example on the importance of speed) but most of the book seems occupied with laundry-lists of ways you can do things (often repeated without much detail) where I would have liked to see more real guidelines recommending one way above another. The book particularly emphasizes "qualifications" meaning expertise (training, experience) - ok, fine, but then you don't need to repeat it 50 times. And the examples provided - largely from scientific literature or the recent financial collapse, don't seem very directly applicable to anything I'm interested in. I realize when you're addressing a cross-industry audience you won't catch everyone's fancy so maybe it really works for other people. It was not what I was expecting though.

Falls somewhat short of its goal

The purpose of this book is to provide advice on how to set up a business analytics infrastructure in a corporation. Among other things, the author describes various roles that exist in a fully developed analytics team:“business quants” possess an advanced degree in a quantitative discipline and work mostly with data performing quantitative modeling. “Expert leaders” are experienced business quants who lead analytics projects. “Ordinary managers of analytics” have formal authority to manage business quants, but they don't have much of quantitative training. This book is mostly addressed to the expert leaders, ordinary managers, and similar individuals who either have or are interested in acquiring leadership and managerial responsibilities in the business analytics area.

While reading, I had a distinct feeling that the author is very experienced and knowledgeable, but for some reason he decided to share his expertise in a manner that made the book far less useful than it could have been. Most of the time he dispenses advice in way too general terms, with few specific examples from the industry. “There are countless examples of corporations that closed their doors or were severely impacted by a single poor decision, let alone a series of them” - says the author on p 138. I was excited when I reached it, thinking that he eventually decided to share some of those anecdotes in detail, but to no avail. If only the book had contained 5-10 more of such examples, it would have been far more effective in reaching its goal; in addition, it would have appealed to a far broader subset of analytics professionals, including business quants.

Great book for those working as a business analyst / manager / leader

This book gives real world insights of how business analytics plays out in the real world. It walks through the basics of managing data and analytics best practices. The author makes a strong case for the business need for analytics, some of which I will shamelessly borrow to justify my own internal analytics project :-) I also enjoyed the writing style of Mr. Bartlett. he kept it as light and easy as possible. The footnotes were particularly funny.

This book is not academic, full of boring equations. However, if you work in or lead a real world analytics group, and you work in a typical company (with its typical data / analytics shortcomings), this book will help you understand the opportunities and start toward realizing them

One of my most valued books.

Published in 1965 by Hugh Evelyn Ltd and not reprinted since, this book is printed in large landscape format. The author took a unique approach to his subject, providing a series of plates showing the different patterns of uniform drawn in the form of silhouettes. This was a popular form of cheap portraiture at the time, cut from black card and mounted.

All the plates, of the right profile, are in colour and represent their subject from just below waist level. The format used is text descriptions on the left-hand pages discussing two oval silhouettes on the opposite page, twenty in total, detailed and of high quality. With the exception of an illustration of an officer of the Royal Marines the plates are of navy officers.

The text is interspersed with a number of drawings illustrating buttons for the various ranks, the `vellum and check' lace worn from 1795, collar embroidery of a ship's surgeon, and a flag officers distinction star worn from 1795.

This book, despite its age, successfully evokes the style of the silhouette portrait and the military fashion of the Royal Navy. Highly recommended and well worth reprinting.

A really great book on Hershey

If you have been to Hershey and the museum, this book fills in the details around what you've seen. Very much worth having. Especially if you like chocolate. I first found out about this book when one of the guides pulled out a copy to answer several questions about the exhibit. The guides use this book as their reference. I saw the extensive amount of information in the book and asked if I could get a copy in their book store. They don't carry any copies at the book store so if you want to get a copy I suggest you check it out on Amazon.

A very raunchy book

This book is a fantasy about a female doctor who discovers a world of BDSM.
Along with a very believable story with some poignant moments there are a plethora of well described and deeply erotic bondage and torture experiences.
It is great to read a story which explores a submissive woman's acceptance of a relationship in which she agrees to accept everything that her master decides to subject her to.
The only problem that I found in reading this book was that I got so turned on as I read it that I needed to take "Time out".
It is a book that couples could read together and it would very likely get them thinking of exciting things that they could do together.
An interesting part of the book is that the heroine gives her master carte blanch to subject her to anything that he wishes to do with her knowing that he has previous experience and will not do anything that is physically dangerous. She knows that if she placed safeguards in place, like a safe-word, she would be able to "chicken out" and almost certainly would before experiencing the magic of a deeply powerful erotic BDSM experience.
An amusing aside of the book is the funny way that the author deals with the many differences in the way Americans speak and the way Australians speak and their way of life.
This book is a serious work well over 100k words in length and would be a great read even if it were not for the deeply erotic sections. I have never experienced an erotic novel that has the depth of this work

Nonconsensual BDSM

On the face of it this is a straight-forward novel about the introduction of a new sub, Jacqui, to BDSM by a Dom, Andrew. What is unbelievable, is that the Author describes the Dom as refusing to let Jacqui use a safe word! The notion of a new sub, planning to scene for the first time with a man she has only recently met with no safe word goes against the principles of safe, sane and consensual that any responsible Dom would accept. The potential for severe legal action against the author and publisher is high. Amazon should not be selling this book. I have returned the book to Amazon.

For readers who are unfamiliar with hip-hop icons and artists, this book provides quick and convenient biographical sketches in alphabetical order of singers, rappers, and others. A list of standard English terms translated into "Slanguage" follows the main body of definitions. Next comes "Folk in the Know," an alphabetical list of pop- and hip-hop-related celebrities. However, this list does not include definitions or biographical information, and therefore its purpose is not clear. Overall, the book can be fun and informative-especially for students studying English as a second language. Native speakers of English who are isolated from hip-hop culture, yet want to better understand rap, R & B, and other black-youth-oriented art and media, will also enjoy this book.

Aiming to create a work that "capture[s] the language and preserve[s] the culture of hip-hop, [while also serving] as a tool for education," New York City-based journalist Westbrook here offers a "hoptionary" defining roughly 2500 terms. The book is divided into three sections: slang to standard English, standard English to slang (both thumb-indexed), and a list of hip-hop artists. While there is a need for a well-written reference on hip-hop, this book does not fit the bill. Numerous spelling errors appearing throughout the final proof include "Introductiory," "tims," "permance," "omone," and "Fflorida." Many of these errors are close enough to the correct spelling for the reader to guess the intended word, but some apparent errors add to the reader's puzzlement. For instance, "waze out" is defined as "syke," a word this reviewer was unable to define even after checking two standard dictionaries, two slang dictionaries, www. dictionary.com, www.1000dictionaries.com, and several of the web sites listed on page 69 and talking to some teens familiar with hip-hop. Searching for phrases is hampered by the pagination, which is limited to odd numbers found on the right-hand pages, and the cross-referencing is inconsistent. For instance, "smell me" is cross-referenced to "feed me," a phrase that does not appear in the dictionary. In addition, of the 24 hip-hop web sites listed, two were inaccessible. Finally, the author's selection criteria are unclear, as many of the words found here can also be found in one or more of the established dictionaries with the same definitions. Examples include "B.E.T.," "wallflowers," "copyright," "cronies," "hot flashes," "young'uns," "coochie," and "swag," which this reviewer checked against The Random House Dictionary of the English Language (1987. 2d ed. unabridged), The American Heritage Concise Dictionary (Houghton, 1994. 3d ed.), The New Dictionary of American Slang (1986), and A Concise Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English (1989). Of limited use, this book is further restricted by its seeming to address the black community only, though hip-hop culture crosses color and ethnic lines. Not recommended.

I thoroughly and immensely enjoyed it!

I have a 14 year old white daughter who is into hip hop, and quite frankly I can't relate to her. (Ok, maybe when i grew up in e 70's with Wayne Newton and the Carpenters, being "phat" was being a bit on the pudgy side!) At any rate, I can't understand anything that my angel says, so I figured...."What the heck", I'll purchase this lexicon and ultimately get back into the good graces of my first born. Well, did I ever!!!!! We're starting our own hip hop band called "Allison and the fat, bald father", and let me tell you, I won't be the only "phat" part of this equation. We're already counting the dead presidents!!!! Thanks Alonzo for bringing my little girl back to me.

Deceptively Simple Premise That is a Journey About Travel, History, and What is Important

No Baggage is a very focused memoir, occurring mostly within three weeks sprinkled with some brief flashbacks. The premise of the memoir is simple -- two people set off on a three week trip, with no firm plans, and packing less than the essentials. It's also a bit uncomfortable, as these two blithely ignore what has become the norm of luggage, places to stay, and itineraries and simply let events unfold.

First, meet Clara, a young woman very recently recovered from a nervous breakdown and life crisis. Briefly joining OK Cupid, Clara meets Jeff, a smart and unconventional university professor who loves to travel with a passport, a phone, a credit card, and few hundred dollars. Jeff has taken many trips this way, but usually solo, so when he invites Clara to join him traveling to Istanbul, it's a big deal. Or perhaps not, as both Clara and Jeff are torn between their desire to be uncommitted and their instant attraction to each other. So, with only the clothes they are wearing and what they can store in their pockets, the two start their trip by traveling to Istanbul.

It's difficult at first to conceive how they travel with no baggage, no places to stay, and no formal plans. However, their lack of baggage becomes freeing, you can decide where you want to go next and be ready in 10 minutes. Relying on the Couchsurfing site, Clara and Jeff find more than a bed for a night or two, but meet kindred spirits willing to open their homes, and frequently share their social lives, with complete strangers. Some days are challenging and tiring, but most are fun adventures. As the trip progresses, Clara and Jeff wonder about each other and the relationship they've found, while Clara worries about her newly found mental health.

I enjoyed No Baggage, especially the mix of personal, travel log, and history in the book. It's clear that Clara is an intelligent, fine writer, and so was able to immerse the reader in their travels without resorting to highlighting the presumed eccentricity of the trip. Instead, the reader easily saw how this trip was the right thing for these two people at this time. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys memoirs, travel, and stories about courage.

What a leap of faith

An absolutely amazing and terrifying idea. Even when I was young I could not have contemplated such a trust in the world. Clara, the author embarks with Jeff a fairly new dating prospect to spend 3 weeks abroad with no luggage. Nothing more than the clothes they are wearing, some spare underwear, cellphones and her purse. Of course the cell phones due to international lack of compatibility are only useful on WiFi.
The place they start is Istanbul. The irony does not escape me that the book I reviewed prior to this, is the 100 year walk and the author there was retracing her grandfather’s steps of the Armenian genocide, in this very same location. That author felt the oppressiveness of that government and was happy to get home. This author with so little luggage was nervous due to protests happening while she was there, but did not carry the same concern. I guess the universe brings what you expect.

While reading the book, the author tells of a recent brush with mental illness, one where she was paralysed with fear and could not function day to day. When I think of the amount of trust this trip required I can help but think, I want what she is taking...Wow. This is a complete flip flop. Her parents struck me as free spirits and even they were concerned. Her companion Jeff was a divorced man, that had a 5 year old daughter, a professor that lived out of his office contemplating living in a dumpster (school project). While I applaud his lack of materialism and sense of freedom, as a divorced parent myself, I don’t envy his ex-wife or daughter. He wanted freedom and parenting is being someone who can be depended on. I kept wondering (despite the author’s applauding his role in his daughter’s life) what their take on this was.

Overall the writing is magnificent. This author has a gift of pondering not only about her surroundings but of the geography of relationships and why we are here. This is a great book. I enjoyed the serendipitous occasions and virtually enjoyed their freedoms.

A joy to read, thought provoking but not heavy. I recommend it!

I really enjoyed reading Clara Bensen's book, "No Baggage". Clara is a young, college graduate living and working in a fairly menial job as a manager of a bead/jewelry store in Austin, TX. After spending a few years in an existential depression, she decides it time to join the ranks of the living once again. On a bit of a whim, she signs up for an OK Cupid account and sends a message to a quirky professor. Jeff responds to Clara's message and the two start dating. A month later, Jeff invites Clara on a three week trip from Istanbul to London. There is a catch, though. They both must travel with no baggage and must make no plans, itineraries or reservations anywhere. They are also to avoid hotels. Clara brings a small purse with meager supplies (three pairs of underwear, two tampons, chapstick, a comb) and wears a lovely, but slightly impractical green tailored dress.

This book follows Jeff and Clara as they haphazardly criss-cross Europe. We see the relationship strengthen as the pair have to rely on each and we see the consequences of traveling with someone you have only known for a month. Will Jeff and Clara remain together by the end of the trip. Will the quirky professor go from quirky to completely annoying? Hmm, you'll have to read the book to find out.

The writing in the book is first class. It is an easy read, but thought provoking at the same time. If you have some knowledge of Greek mythology, you'll even enjoy the story more (lots of references to Diogenes). Clara is clearly a bright, well read, and thoughtful woman. Jeff, well let's just say that his intelligence is not particularly featured in this story. I will definitely read more books by this author. I also think this would make an easy fun, book club choice. There would be lots to discuss and touch on. I applaud Clara's sense of adventure and am slightly tempted to try my own version of her trip -- with one small bag.

The origins of this book came in the early 1990’s when both editors (Jim Sawyer and Dan Wallace) were facing trauma in their lives and in the lives of their families—traumas that their rationalistic theological training had left them unequipped to deal with. Who's Alive to the Holy Spirit?

In 1993, Chuck Swindoll authored "Flying Closer to the Flame: A Passion for the Holy Spirit." What that book was for the general non-charismatic Protestant lay person, "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?" is for the scholarly non-charismatic Protestant pastor, professor, and student.

The co-editors, Wallace and Sawyer, along with the nine other contributing authors, all write from the cessationist theological camp. Cessationists believe that the Bible teaches that the sign gift ministry of the Holy Spirit ceased at the close of the New Testament canon. These sign gifts (such as the gift of healing, miracle working, speaking in tongues, prophecy, etc.) were given to authenticate the apostolic ministry and message of inspired Scripture and not meant to be ongoing aspects of the Spirit's ministry in the believer throughout church history.

The purpose of "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?" is not to provide theological support for that view. Instead, that view is assumed. Rather, the purpose is to stretch their fellow cessationists to consider the ongoing, active, powerful, personal presence and ministry of the Spirit today in the experiential life of the non-charismatic Christian.

Wallace and Sawyer launch their edited work with candid narratives of their personal experience in the cessationist camp. When life crisis struck, their personal, academic approach to the Spirit was found wanting. At the same time, their theological convictions did not allow for a charismatic experience of the Spirit. Out of that tension, this book was born. How does a non-charismatic cessationist experience the power and presence of the Holy Spirit?

The eleven assembled cessationist scholars address that question theologically, historically, and personally. As with any collaborative book, the linkage between various chapters can be choppy and the value of diverse chapters varies. However, over all, readers are exposed to a wide assortment of important theological examinations.

Before a summary overview, readers should understand, as noted in the opening paragraph of this review, that this book is not for those disinclined toward scholarly detail. Swindoll's book, though fifteen years old, is still the place to go for the lay non-charismatic wanting a practical theology of the Holy Spirit.

One of the central issues addressed is summarized by several of the authors in the disturbing picture of the cessationist "Trinity": Father, Son, and Holy Scripture." Yes, you read that right--Holy Scripture. Wallace and his co-writers sense that for many non-charismatics the Holy Scriptures have replaced the Holy Spirit. The authors ask readers to consider what the role of the Spirit is in their lives now that the canon is completed.

Wallace's chapter on the witness of the Spirit in Romans 8:16 is core to that discussion. In a nutshell, Wallace presents a joint ministry of Spirit and Scripture. Believers have confidence that they are Christians based upon the objective testimony of Scripture and the subjective witness of the Spirit. This dual, mingled role of Spirit and Scripture is emphasized throughout "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?"

Richard Averbeck, in his chapter on "God, People, and the Bible," does a fine job exploring the relationship between illumination and biblical scholarship. He also does an excellent job convicting the typical evangelical scholar of his/her failure to be dependent upon and open to the Spirit in the scholarly process.

"The Spirit in the Black Church" by Willie Peterson is one of those "worth the price of the book" chapters. For anyone wanting a handle on how black cessationist evangelicals handle the "tension" between the experience of the Spirit and the cessation of the sign gifts, this is the chapter to read. Peterson's blending of history, theology, culture, and current ministry is example-setting.

David Eckman's chapter on "The Holy Spirit and Emotions" should be required reading for all seminary professors, students, pastors, and Christian counselors. It provides the seeds for a much needed evangelical theology of emotions. Emotional intelligence has been a buzz word in secular writing for nearly two decades. Yet the Christian community still has not offered a practical biblical theology of emotionality. Eckman has laid the foundation.

Co-editor James Sawyer's concluding chapter "The Father, the Son, and the Holy Scriptures?" powerfully encapsulates the message of the book. Sawyer journeys with readers on an important historical trek which opens eyes to why cessationists have become so afraid of the Holy Spirit. His fascinating and ironic premise is that the same evangelicals who decry how the Enlightenment influenced liberal Christianity, were themselves influenced by Enlightenment rationalism. Ouch. You have to read it to appreciate it.

Overall, "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?" is a timely book that has already stirred up much needed conversation. Admittedly, a few chapters were uneven at times--seeming not to fit the overall flow of the book--as if they had been written for other venues (which is most likely true) and woven into the fabric of this book. Yet, that is minor in the overall scope of this important contribution to the field.

Perhaps the true "criticism" I have about this book is its failure to provide a "spiritual theology of the Holy Spirit." Before I explain that, I should say that in fairness to the authors, that was not the full intention of this book. So, my encouragement would be that they rejoin to write "volume two."

As I think about the theological process, I see at least four "types" of theologies: academic, historical, practical/pastoral, and spiritual. Academic theology (including systematic, biblical, exegetical, and lexical) explores the "What?" questions. As the label suggests, it is academic in nature. This book does a splendid job exploring the academic theology of the Holy Spirit from a cessationist perspective.

Historical theology explores the development of doctrine over time. It asks the "What then?" questions. This book also does an excellent job uncovering and presenting the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in the evangelical tradition.

Spiritual theology asks the "So what?" questions. What are the implications for our lives of the academic truths discovered in the text? "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?" did a commendable job challenging readers to consider such implications. It presented many categories for the cessationist Christian to think through.

Practical/pastoral theology asks the "What now?" questions. How do we personally apply and how do we disciple, mentor, and guide others in the application of the text? Here is where I felt a level of disappointment with the book. As a pastor/counselor/professor/soul physician, I wanted more practical direction. We learned what not to do. We even learned what areas to think through. But we readers were not given many pictures of what this actually looks like in daily existence. We were not given many models of discipleship ministry. What exactly does it look like to equip and empower cessationist Christians to be filled with the Spirit, to be led by the Spirit, to express the fruit of the Spirit. While some of these topics were broached, the focus often failed to address fully the practical "what now?" questions. Again, no one book can "do it all." But a book emphasizing how cessationists can and should experience the empowering presence of the Spirit could "go there." I hope the next volume does so to a greater extent. That said, I still highly recommend this book. It deserves all five of its stars.

An Excellent Treatise on the Holy Spirit . . .

This book is highly recommended for the seminarian, scholar or lay-person who seeks to understand the role of the Holy Spirit in the everyday life of a believer. While the book is written from a cessationist standpoint, the contributors argue that the third person of the Trinity is indispensible for the proper study of the Bible, for a right understanding of our emotions, for authentic worship in the local church, and for a Christ-centered love of all people. Of special note are Wallace's essay on "The Witness of the Holy Spirit in Rom 8:16," Averbeck's piece entitled "God, People, and the Bible," and Willie O. Peterson's work on "The Spirit in the Black Church." Perhaps the most moving section of the book, though, is Wallace's introduction entitled "The Uneasy Conscience of a Non-Charismatic Evangelical." Here, Wallace honestly writes of his struggle with God as he and his family came to terms with his son's cancer. The Bible alone was not a remedy for his grief; instead, a personal, existential experience of God was needed, and this came through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. This book reminds us that whether we are scholars or lay-people, the goal of Bible study is not that we simply master the Scripture; instead, we must earnestly desire that the Scripture masters us by the life-changing work of the Spirit. Both cessationists and charismatics will appreciate this book's emphasis on the unique role of the Holy Spirit for the life and practice of the Church; in the end, the work proves to be a thoughtful, penetrating read.

Great resource!

This wonderful book by a group of more than ten cessationist scholars asks the question, "If the Holy Spirit did not die in the first century, then what in the world is He doing today?" J. P. Moreland describes it as "a book whose time has come." Willie Peterson's chapter on "The Spirit in the Black Church" is worth the price of the book.
