Concepts of Space: The History of Theories of Space in Physics: Third, Enlarged Edition, by Max Jammer

Although the concept of space is of fundamental importance in both physics and philosophy, until the publication of this book, the idea of space had never been treated in terms of its historical development. It remained for Dr. Jammer, noted scholar and historian of science, to trace the evolution of the idea of space in this comprehensive, thought-provoking study. The focus of the book is on physical, rather than metaphysical, ideas of space; however, philosophical or theological speculations are discussed when relevant. The author has also given special attention to the cultural settings in which the theories developed.
Following a Foreword by Albert Einstein and an introductory chapter on the concept of space in antiquity, subsequent chapters consider Judaeo-Christian ideas about space, the emancipation of the space concept from Aristotelianism, Newton's concept of absolute space and the concept of space from the eighteenth century to the present. For this third edition, Dr. Jammer has contributed an extensive new chapter six, reviewing the numerous and profound changes in the philosophy of space since the publication of the second edition.
An abundance of meticulously documented quotations from original sources and numerous bibliographic references make this an exceptionally well-documented book. It is essential reading for philosophers, physicists, and mathematicians, but even nonprofessional readers will find it accessible.

Struggle to define and understand fundamental concepts
By A Customer
This book shows just how tortuous has been the struggle in physics (and science in general) to arrive at and comprehend its fundamental concepts. The very first paragraph in Einstein's foreword is worth the price of the entire book, if one truly understands what Einstein has said. Most of us came into physics via ordinary textbook courses, where unfortunately most of the approach was to quickly master the equations and their methods of application. Somehow we never understood that the very foundations of physics are still very much at issue, and our teachers either did not realize this themselves, or considered such musings trivial, or were just too busy to enlighten us. Most of us think that things like space, mass, time, charge, field, potential, zero, and unity are obvious, and it can come as a major shock to one's system to find out that they are not. Most such fundamental concepts still do not have a satisfactory definition. Jammer's book, while cumbersome by its very scholarship, does give one a grasp of just how difficult the foundations problems -- such as the nature of space -- really are. If one is seriously interested in this sort of "deep" problem, then one must discover the literature oneself. Jammer's book is a must. I gave the book a 9 instead of a 10 because of its overall ponderous nature, but highly recommend it to anyone who is deeply interested in the foundations concepts of physics, how we got where we are, what we did along the way, what we may have yet missed, and just how firm or shaky are our concepts today. We also recommend Jammer's other studies of the concept of force and the concept of mass.

Space in physics and metaphysics
By Jordan Bell
This is a survey of ideas about physical space. Four disciplines that impinge on what space is are physics (what do we operationally mean by space?), metaphysics (what is the ontology of space?), mathematics (what mathematical objects match our intuitions for what space is?), and psychology (do we have innate ways of modeling space, how do children perceive space?). This book by Jammer is the only broad survey I have found on space, and it sticks as closely as it can to physics. Unlike so many books from recent decades, it is not a book merely for a specialized scholar or hollow buzz words for the popular reader, and there is room in the literature for a new book like this. Some problems with this book are the large quotes in French, German and Latin and the tensor calculus that is used at the end of the book. (For heavy mathematics, either give an impressionistic explanation or show all the details so that a patient reader could actually understand without having already learned differential geometry.)

One thing I learned in this book is the Jewish idea of thinking of space as a property of God. Jammer quotes from the Midrash Rabbah, "the Lord is the dwelling-place of His world but His world is not His dwelling-place". He also cites the Zohar as stating that God is the space of Himself. He traces the influence of kabbalistic ideas on Tommaso Campanella. Another thing I learned was the Neoplatonic idea of the identity of light and space. Jammer shows the influence of kabbalah and Neoplatonism on the 17th century English philosopher Henry More. He quotes More's "Antidote against atheism", in which More asserts that if matter is removed from the world then there is something left that is incorporeal, and this is God.

This book is an excellent introduction to the development and the importance of the concept of space in physics. The earlier chapters were especially good for the non-mathematician as it used natural language explanations. The last chapter was a bit beyond me because of the mathematical notation, but I did manage to muddle through. I think those with a more physics and mathematical bent, would approve of this book.
