He offers a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of consciousness research and defends his approach against currently popular philosophical views, in particular against approaches that deny or externalize phenomenal consciousness, or claim that brain activity is not sufficient for consciousness. He systematically examines the principal issues in the science of consciousness—the contents of consciousness, the unity of consciousness and the binding problem, the explanatory gap and the neural correlates of consciousness, and the causal powers and function of consciousness.

Revonsuo draws together empirical data from a wide variety of sources, including dream research, brain imaging, neuropsychology, and evolutionary psychology, into the theoretical framework of the biological research program, thus pointing the way toward a unified biological science of consciousness. Applying imaginative thought experiments, Inner Presence reaches beyond the current state-of-the-art, revealing how the problem of consciousness may eventually be solved by future science.

As someone who has followed consciousness studies for over a decade now, I ave begun to feel disapponted at how slowly progress has been made. Philosopher rarely change their ideas substantially (notable exceptions: Tye and Dennett), scientists cannot escape sticking to neural correlates and workspace theory, physicists mantain quantum theory is of the essence, etc. Having said that, I allways loved reading Revonsuo, his papers and collections (He edited a nice book back in 1994, if my memory does not fail me). He has a no nonsense approach, and in many ways his consciousness as virtual-reality model is very intuitively appealing. In this book he tris to compress his ideas into a full-lenght book and succeeds. He knows the field and uses empiric evidence with skill in order to support his more speculative ideas. He is clearly a naturalist, representationalist, and (maybe) reductionist, which is not uncommon, but still difficult to defend. There are a couple of chapters in the book 17 and 18 I believe, where the "level" or "structure" of conscisouness in the brain is discussed, which cannot be missed by anyone interested in the topic. This is as good as a neuroreductive explanation of consciousness can get. The final chapters on zombies and the function of consicousness are well argued. Of course, as any other book written by a scientist, philosophers will have a field day showing how his arguments fail for seome reason or other, either because of conceivability, supervenience, entailment, something Kim or Kripke said, but this should never prevent the biological realist in reading and appreciating a nice framework like what Revonsuo has elaborated for us. This is amust for consciousness-freaks,, especially for those of us who believe it can be explained in cognitive neuroscience terms.

Just a Short Story

I bought this as a test novel for my new Kindle. Alas it isn't a novel - just a short story. It seems a little expensive for just a story. I'll be more careful in the future.

Middle section of "Mission to the Stars"

This is a short story, not a book. It was written in 1943 and is chapters 8 thru 15 of what was later to become "The Mixed Men" and then retitled "Mission to the Stars". Buy the book if you can, although at this time it doesn't seem to be available in Kindle format. I would say you shouldn't buy this piece of it alone. That said, this is 100% vintage AE Van Vogt writing and that means that it's good! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it is only part of a complete story. But it was published as a short story originally and, in fairness, it does stand alone ok.

The setting is this:
In the distant future, artificial but organic, men were created called Dellians. They had conflict with normal humans and escaped to lose themselves in the 250 million stars of the Greater Magellanic Cloud. After thousands of years they grew and developed a society hidden on 50 planets scattered throughout the Cloud. They thought they were secure from being found by Earth and its vast galactic coalition of humans. They also imagined their science was at least as developed and advanced as human science but they were wrong. An immense cruiser several miles in length and capable of annihilating entire planets, accidentally discovers the civilization of the Fifty Suns. An advanced Dellian, called a Mixed Man, was sent aboard the ship in an attempt to lure it into the teeth of a vast interstellar storm and thus be destroyed.

I won't spoil the story but I will say that in some ways it's a boy-meets-girl story, AE Van Vogt style. I think it would make one heck of a good scifi flick, as would many of AE's books.

"Storm" is a van Vogt classic

"The Storm" was written by A. E. van Vogt at the height of his career in the 1940s, and is one of the famed "Mixed Men" stories that van Vogt later collected in a "fix-up" novel. Though it is neither as influential nor provacative as his "Space Beagle," "Null-A" and "Weapon Shops" series, nor his novel "Slan," it still invokes the sense of wonder that van Vogt was famous for. It's well worth reading just to see a Grand Master at work with lesser-that-his-greatest material.

All three techxorist books

An incredible compilation of our current level of computer technology, belief in the destruction of our species, and survival of a few based on new and evolving use of all sorts of technology, and our integration with AI. If our future looks like this, then better to survive as the strong, or die as our multitudes. Mr Barnes has spelled out what happens to each group quite well. More, give me more Mr Barnes.

Brilliant conclusion(?) to the Techxorcist Series!

Annihilation Point combines a good, solid, dystopian sci-fi rollick with an insightful and seemingly effortless peek into the inner-workings of human and social consciousness. These intelligent layers of theme based in morality, loyalty, guilt, regret, love, and sacrifice, are so transparently wrought into the fiber of the story that I often found myself reacting, both physically and emotionally, to an otherwise straight forward plot line. You know it’s a good book when you have to put it down for a moment to get your heart rate under control! With a healthy dose of both joy and tragedy, an often poetic and sometimes startling style of writing, and head-spinning plot twists, Colin F Barnes will keep you engaged in Book 3 of the Techxorcist series from start to finish. (If you have not already read Books 1 & 2 in this series you will definitely want to start there... they will be WELL worth your time.) Having just finished the series, I am already feeling a sense of withdrawal for these thoroughly developed characters and for Barnes words in my head. Luckily the author appears to have left open the possibility for a future addition or two to this excellent “trilogy”!
