Part fact, part fiction, Tyehimba Jess's much anticipated second book weaves sonnet, song, and narrative to examine the lives of mostly unrecorded African American performers directly before and after the Civil War up to World War I. Olio is an effort to understand how they met, resisted, complicated, co-opted, and sometimes defeated attempts to minstrelize them.

So, while I lead this choir, I still find that
I'm being led...I'm a missionary
mending my faith in the midst of this flock...
I toil in their fields of praise. When folks see
these freedmen stand and sing, they hear their God
speak in tongues. These nine dark mouths sing shelter;
they echo a hymn's haven from slavery's weather.

Detroit native Tyehimba Jess is a Cave Canem and NYU Alumni, and has received fellowships from the Whiting Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council, and the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. Jess is also a veteran of the 2000 and 2001 Green Mill Poetry Slam Team. Review
It's something people who care for the music, or for African American cultural history, will read and reread, whether or not they notice its ambitious expansions of what has been possible for the contemporary poem.
-- Stephen Burt, Academy of American Poets

"Olio" is one of the most inventive, intensive poetic undertakings of the past decade...
-- Michael Andor Brodeur, Boston Globe

Encyclopedic, ingenious, and abundant, this outsized second volume from Jess celebrates the works and lives of African-American musicians, artists, and orators who predated the Harlem Renaissance.
—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

It's been a decade since Tyehimba Jess's debut, and this sprawling, extraordinary book shows he's used his time well.
—Craig Morgan Teicher, NPR

This daring collection, which blends forthright, musically acute language with portraiture (e.g., poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Scott Joplin, and Booker T. Washington) to capture the African American experience from the Civil War to World War I. An impressive follow-up to leadbelly.
—Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal, Starred Review

Olio is one of the most inventive, intensive poetic undertakings of the past decade…Through photos, drawings, interviews, foldouts, tables, facts, fictions, and yes, so many strong poems … Olio assembles and raises the voices of an essential chorus: “Listen to how we sing while we/ promises unto ourselves not to die.”
—Boston Globe

The content of this book really is a remarkable one...Tyehimba Jess gathers the histories of the lives—untold lives of many of the African-American artists who sort of built the blues and jazz and the sound that...we consider quintessentially American. And he's written these poems as history in a variety of voices, in a chorus.
—All Things Considered

Once I closed these pages I came to the conclusion that Tyehimba is our Langston—not necessarily in terms of style or lyrical sensibility, but in terms of proficiency and historical impact. It is the rigor with which this book archives history, offers new narratives and context for the “characters” it contains that leads me to the conclusion that readers a century from now will count this among the treasures that are emblematic of this era.
—African Voices

If you’ve been wanting to get into poetry but haven’t been willing to give up the power, characters, and length of a novel, Olio is the book for you.
—Lit Hub

A tremendous, and tremendously accessible, book of poetry.
—Brooklyn Magazine

I don't want to overstate the case, but there is no way around it: Tyehimba Jess's Olio is a tour de force.
—On the Seawall

Tyehimba Jess’s second book, Olio, is a book without rules, blues on the page. It weaves new and reimagined facts with poetry, prose, and biographies of first-generation freed slaves who performed in minstrel shows. A spellbinding and lyrical melange of verse, Olio resembles its namesake—a minstrel show’s hodgepodge variety act that later evolved into Vaudeville, “the heart of American show business.”
—Tupelo Quarterly

Historical personae has long proven to be a useful protest tool against oppression, and is, for this reason, not new to African-American poetry. Olio, though, is so ambitious, so relentless in its pursuit of the antebellum realities that remade our country, with its entrance into the canon we are jolted awake by a hundred alarms, a century’s racket.
—Oxford American

[T]he variety that Tyehimba Jess packs into Olio amply supports his goals of celebrating African-American musicial genius and bearing "wit-ness" (in the dual sense of affirming truth and acknowledging intelligence and agency) to "first generation freed voices," especially those of never recorded nineteenth-century artists. At 235 pages, Olio is so plentiful it is impossible to read in one sitting. Not only does its format invite browsing, but Jess encourages readers to "weave your own chosen way between the voices."
—Hudson Review

This 21st century hymnal of black evolutionary poetry, this almanac, this theatrical melange of miraculous meta-memory. Tyehimba Jess is inventive, prophetic, wondrous. He writes unflinchingly into the historical clefs of blackface, black sound, human sensibility. After the last poem is read we have no idea how long we've been on our knees.
—Nikky Finney

Olio is a masterpiece!!! Do not miss anything Tyehimba Jess writes! WOW!
By Meg Tuite
Tyehimba Jess has created a masterpiece of historical literature through syncopation and musicality of language that blows the mind! The greatest musicians and vaudevillians: slaves in early 19th century-early 20th century: John William "Blind" Boone, Henry "Box" Brown, Paul Laurence Dunbar, The Fisk Jublilee Singers, Ernest Hogan, Sissieretta Jones, Scott Joplin, Millie and Christine McKoy, Booker T. Washington (quote: "He who dances language note for note on the industrial soapbox. He who, even still, feels a twist in his dome for his folk who still till fields of poems."), "Blind" Tom Wiggins, Bert Williams and George Walker, Wildfire, or Edmonia Lewis.
Olio quote: "Fix your eyes on the flex of these first-generation-freed voices: They coalesce in counterpoint, name nemeses, summon tongue to wit-ness. Weave your own chosen way between these voices....OLIO."
The treasure is on each and every tongue that Jess envelops with his fierce beauty that transcends and encompasses all: poetry, music, philosophy, history, dialect, conversation, lists: those lynched by the 100 thousands in the Southern states between 1882-1930 and the reasons given for the black lynchings.
"I ain't bending over no piano like a plow on a sharecropper's piece."
"–I'll just play the notes inside my skull alone in the dark where they roam around loose. 'Cause playing like a slave, I'd just step myself straight into a hangman's noose."
On Sissieretta Jones, Jess writes: "See, Sissie would know how to let folks into one mask and out through another. She'd even raise a toast to the mask, jokin about whether folk–black and white–really believed that the opera was wearing her as a mask, or if it just tickled them to see her puttin on that white mask of Vivaldi. Was it her voice or someone else's? they'd seem to ask. Well, it was all her. Every note, in whiteface or blackface or in just plain old American, went straight down to her bones. That's what I heard when I truly listened, anyway. She'd pour those opera songs all over her body and then dress herself in the church frock of hymns. She told me one time, that in order to hear her true voice, she'd had to ask herself about her own masks. What kind of mask might I have on? she said. Because let me tell you, most don't even know they're wearing a mask. You've got to know which masks, how many masks you're wearing before you can put it down and see your true self. Those that do, they know just how to slide in and out of it, how to make the world spin inside it and out of it. How to spread their song all over that mask and make it one with the world, no matter how thick or thin the truth in that song might be."
Heartwrenching brilliance and there is no outside these people. Jess brings every one to life! This is a book to be read aloud! Again and again and again! (and photos, fold-outs, illustrations: the structure of "Olio" is its own composition of a musical score: exquisite in every way!
The ache and reach from the past wrenches the gut as all the masks of today continue to kill and maim under the guise of badges, self-defense, etc. and there's no missing the seething brutality of pulverized flesh in every fisted lie!
If you only read one book this year, make it this one! "Olio" is a phenomenon! This is an epic. Thank you, Tyehimba Jess! Not enough stars for this one!

Olio Sings
By wordybirdy
'Olio" by Tyehimba Jess is a remarkable flip on John Berryman's "Dream Songs". It evokes power, empathy and a strong sense of the current racial inequalities in our society. The poems are beautiful. The publisher once again has produced a tangible piece of art with pieces of the poem that can be folded out, ripped out and turned in different directions.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory, by Caitlin Doughty

“Morbid and illuminating” (Entertainment Weekly)―a young mortician goes behind the scenes of her curious profession.

Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty―a twenty-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre―took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. Thrown into a profession of gallows humor and vivid characters (both living and very dead), Caitlin learned to navigate the secretive culture of those who care for the deceased.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters and unforgettable scenes. Caring for dead bodies of every color, shape, and affliction, Caitlin soon becomes an intrepid explorer in the world of the dead. She describes how she swept ashes from the machines (and sometimes onto her clothes) and reveals the strange history of cremation and undertaking, marveling at bizarre and wonderful funeral practices from different cultures.

Her eye-opening, candid, and often hilarious story is like going on a journey with your bravest friend to the cemetery at midnight. She demystifies death, leading us behind the black curtain of her unique profession. And she answers questions you didn’t know you had: Can you catch a disease from a corpse? How many dead bodies can you fit in a Dodge van? What exactly does a flaming skull look like?

Honest and heartfelt, self-deprecating and ironic, Caitlin's engaging style makes this otherwise taboo topic both approachable and engrossing. Now a licensed mortician with an alternative funeral practice, Caitlin argues that our fear of dying warps our culture and society, and she calls for better ways of dealing with death (and our dead).

A sobering yet funny look at what happens behind-the-scenes in a crematorium
By sb-lynn
I had trouble coming up with a title for this review that wouldn't turn off anyone because I think this is an important book and I hope many, many people read it.

The author of this book has been fascinated with the subject of death and dying since she was a young girl and witnessed the death of another young girl who took a fall at a local mall. For years afterwards she was filled with angst and trepidation and described herself as "functionally morbid."

When she went to college she got a degree in medieval history with a focus on death and rituals and afterwards got a job working at a mortuary - the Westwind Cremation & Burial.

This book describes her experiences facing death straight on and how it actually eased her own existential angst and made her better able to appreciate and enjoy her own life. We not only read (detailed) descriptions of what happens to bodies in a crematorium, we also learn about other mortuary practices and what really happens behind the scenes.

The author makes such an important case against our own culture's tendency to avoid death (and aging!) and to try to avoid its very existence. She points out how in the past and how even today - in other cultures - family and neighbors took care of their dead and witnessed dying all the time. She points out how important that is to accepting our own death and by doing so, make it less frightening and esoteric.

Lest I give the impression that this is a depressing book, for me it was not. There are so many laugh-out-loud moments and when I finished the last page I found myself with a little less of my own existential angst.

This book reminded me a lot of science writer Mary Roach and I feel like I'd love to hang out and be friends with both of them. Ms. Doughty has such a pleasant writing style and when you're finished reading, you will not only have been entertained but educated as well. She takes on this sobering and angst-filled subject with an abundance of wit and sensitivity. I hope this book gets the attention and audience it deserves.

"Looking our mortality straight in the eye is no easy feat."
By Malfoyfan
I found this book to be a refreshing, unsentimental and honest look at the way Americans deal with death - which is to say, not very effectively. Author Doughty spent time working in a crematory and later went through mortuary school, and her memoir is by turns darkly funny, fascinating, disgusting, and touching. I have a lot of admiration for anyone who works in a crematory, does embalming, or deals with mourning relatives - it's very challenging work and I couldn't do it.

In addition to her own story, Doughty skillfully weaves in a history of embalming, American funeral traditions, other cultures' funeral rites and beliefs about death, and how the mortuary industry works, and it's all quite interesting, if sometimes a little difficult to read. If you're squeamish, it might be best to steer clear, as Doughty spares no description in her quest to open the reader's eyes to what really happens to our bodies after we die and how we can best understand and deal with death more honestly and directly than we currently do.

I don't know if I should say I "enjoyed" this book the way I would enjoy a novel, but I certainly appreciated it, especially since I have gone through the deaths of family members and am getting on in years myself, and I feel it's important to explore and be able to talk about our own ends openly, rather than tiptoeing around the subject.

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the mortuary/funeral industry, medical students (doctors in this country don't deal with death very well), and anyone who, like me, wants to understand more about death and how to plan for it.

Make Sure You're Ready To Face Mortality!
By Quirky Girl
I was really torn about how to review this. I have a background in emergency medicine, so I understand that a sense of humor and looking at things in a non-serious way is what helps people get through difficult takes. I remember one time a reporter was riding a-long with us and we were dispatched to an accident. The reporter asked how I felt or something and I said, "I hope it turns into a vehicle rescue!" I ended up getting in trouble for saying that, though those who have worked in EMS/FIRE/POLICE totally understand where I'm coming from. It's not that I wished harm on anyone, it's just that I hoped the call would be challenging. So, it was with that sense of understanding I thought I was going to enjoy Doughty's trip into the world of what happens when EMS or doctors or whomever can't save a person.
I was not ready.
I only read a few chapters and had to put it down. Perhaps its my age (though I'm not that old!) I am facing mortality possibly sooner than I surely thought I would. And reading about what goes on behind closed doors, even though Doughty seems to be a great storyteller, I can't bring myself to finish this.
I'm giving this four stars because I certainly can't fault the author for my own lack of misjudgment, but not 5 stars because perhaps if she had written it in a...less witty (though I totally understand and appreciate her being herself!) and more oh...gah, I don't know, tender? way, I might have been able to swallow my fear and plod on.
As a Vine reviewer, I am obligated to leave a review, and I've never had this situation occur (and I feel dreadful about it!). I probably would have done well to read the first few chapters prior to choosing this, and I think it's a good recommendation for those considering reading Smoke...you might think you're ready to read about death, but once you open that door, you might wish you had kept it closed.
Bravo to Doughty and those who do the jobs they do.

Reminded me of a biology text....
By A. Stallings
I ordered this text book for my human sexuality psychology course, but it reminded me of an A&P and biology text book. However, with the right professor and syllable it could be very informative and eye opening.

Good info but...
By S. Conroy
The author takes a somewhat casual approach. At first, it was a bit off-setting as I was expecting a more "professional" presentation of the material. Still, I got used to it and was able to get some good information from the book. There are A LOT of questions presented and many of them are very similar to others. Perhaps it should have been more like 50 questions to ask. He does sum it up at the end with the best 20 questions. After reading through the whole book, I think just those last 20 at the end of the book would have been sufficient. One other "complaint:" I am in the medical field and felt the book was aimed more at business jobs particularly sales jobs. A lot of the questions do not apply for medical position interviews.

Excellent Book! A MUST for anyone seeking questions to ask in an interview!
By Vivica Shade
This was an excellent book, with a lot of great questions to ask in an interview. I purchased this a week before an interview for a position at my current company and just skimmed through the book the night before the interview and wrote down 20 questions. In my interview, the interviewer asked me 20 of his own questions and when it came time for me to ask questions, I asked my 20 questions. :)

Although I didn't get the position I had initially interviewed for due to lack of experience, the interviewer was so impressed with me asking as many questions as I did, he wanted me on his team to replace the person who had been offered the other position. When he posted the other position, I had to interview for it (I was the only person who applied) and asked some of the same questions again, but not as many and more geared towards the new position. Needless to say, I've been offered the job and we are working on the hours I will work.

I haven't tried these questions on any external positions, but they worked great for internal positions, so I'm confident that if I were applying for positions outside the company, these questions would be very good to ask.

A "Must Read!" for Job Seekers
By stillclickin'
I thought I was ready to begin interviewing, then I picked up this book and its companion "101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions". I realized that I still had a lot of work to do before crossing a prospective employer's threshold. This book not only tells you what you need to do before the interview, it gives you the tools and worksheets with which to properly prepare. I was once a manager who conducted interviews for positions within my department. I was not a trained interviewer. I saw my interviewing style described in this book, and it was not flattering. At the time I thought I was a good interviewer. My employees were good employees and often advanced within the company, so I must have done something right. In reading this book I realized I was the "gut feeling plus skills" employer. If you are a job seeker you owe it to yourself to read these books long before leaving the house.

"Brown's book Just Enough is a compelling account of how Edo Japan confronted similar environmental problems and created solutions that connected farms and cities, people and nature." —Huffington Post

The world has changed immeasurably over the last thirty years, with more, bigger, better being the common mantra. But in the midst of this constantly evolving world, there is a growing community of people who are looking at our history, searching for answers to issues that are faced everywhere, such as energy, water, materials, food and population crisis.

In Just Enough, author Azby Brown turned to the history of Japan, where he finds a number of lessons on living in a sustainable society that translate beyond place and time. This book of stories depicts vanished ways of life from the point of view of a contemporary observer, and presents a compelling argument around how to forge a society that is conservation-minded, waste-free, well-housed, well-fed and economically robust.

Included at the end of each section are lessons in which Brown elaborates on what Edo Period life has to offer us in the global battle to reverse environmental degradation. Covering topics on everything from transportation, interconnected systems, and waste reduction to the need for spiritual centers in the home, there is something here for everyone looking to make changes in their life.

Just Enough is much-needed beacon in our evolving world, giving us hope in our efforts to achieve sustainability now.

Heartwarming time travel to pre-modern Japan
By Frere
A deep dive into the architecture, agriculture, sociology and soul of rural & urban Japan in the 18th century, just before the irruption of the "modern" times. Spiritually and technically inspiring for rethinking modern homes and life styles. An excellent surprise, congratulations to the author for this careful and thorough work.

Azby Brown's work over the past thirty years provides him with a unique perspective of life in medieval Japan. This book describes the inner workings of Edo period Japan with great detail. As a book of stories it is an easy read providing insight to a society that found uses for everything while keeping most of its members happy and satisfied throughout their lives.

An integrated and comprehensive theory of PWM

The selection of the best algorithm for optimum pulse width modulation is an important process that can result in improved converter efficiency, better load (motor) efficiency, and reduced electromagnetic interference. However, the identification of the best approach is a complex process requiring extensive mathematical manipulation.

Pulse Width Modulation for Power Converters: Principles and Practice is the first single-volume resource written to help researchers in the field attain a working knowledge of the subject. The authors bring together today’s seemingly diverse approaches into a single integrated and comprehensive theory of modulation.

The book provides a generalized approach to the fundamentals of PWM, looking at:

  • Active switch pulse width determination
  • Active switch pulse placement within a switching period
  • Active switch pulse sequence between phase legs and across switching periods

The main benefit of this generalized concept is that once the common threads are identified, the selection of a modulation strategy for any converter topology becomes immediately clear, leaving only secondary factors, such as practical performance, cost, and difficulty of implementation to consider. Additionally, it allows the performance of any particular converter topology and PWM strategy to be quickly and easily identified without complex and time-consuming analysis. Pulse Width Modulation for Power Converters: Principles and Practice enables the reader to achieve optimum PWM results for any application.

Excellent book
By arvi
This is a very unique book - which discusses in-detail the performance of different modulation methods (SPWM, SV-PWM etc) for a variety of inverter topologies. The book is very math intensive - the authors develops an analytical technique in the first few chapters and then applies the technique it in the rest of the book. A must have for graduate students or engineers working with inverters - with a special interest in modulation techniques and characterizing their performance.
