HAWAIIN HISTORY :AN ANNOTED BIBLIOGRAPHY

This compilation of bibliographic material is very comprehensive but it is not particularly

well organized. It seems to jump around because of the non-chronological category to category

references. It is a bit difficult to articulate this with great clarity. One really needs to

thumb through the pages, firsthand, to comprehend this organizational flaw. Aside from this issue,

the book covers some of the earliest important works and is a great resource.

Why is this book not a movie yet? Seriously...

This was the third Ben Elton book I've read, albeit this particular book was the one I was originally recommended (by a munter at V Festival, I might add) I actually rate this in my 5 favourite books. `High Society' is written in short sections - not chapters. This fact, along with the obvious subject matter, makes it an ideal book for the non reader. It follows the story of a few central characters, all with a connection to drugs.

Peter Paget is the main character. He is a recently revitalised back bench Labour MP, questing to pass a members bill that legalises all drugs in the UK. Tommy Hanson, the winner of (insert generic music talent show here) and a subsequent British superstar, wants to stop living like a rock'n'roll trash bag. Jessie is a 17 year old Weedgie girl who hastily moves to London, gets hooked on heroin - and ends up on the game. Sonia, an 18 year old Brummy bird gets banged up in a Thai prison for trying to smuggle heroin back to the UK. Samantha Spencer is Paget's beautiful, but emotionally unhinged parliamentary secretary. Paula Wooldridge is a recreational drug user. She is also a hack journalist determined to end Paget's career. Barry Leman is an honest, old school police officer on Paget's side. He is threatened by a couple of corrupt police officers, to keep out of drug policy.

`High Society' is an addictive (pardon the pun) page turner, full of scallywags, reprobates, junkies, drinkers, and party people. Aside from all of this frivolity, there are shrewd thoughts, honest observations, and important questions asked throughout the pages of this book. The topic is poignant, and one of the most controversial issues of our times. Although I'm not fully convinced - Ben Elton argues a good case for the legalisation of drugs.

Couldn't put it down.

I've enjoyed all of Ben Elton's books, but none so much as High Society. This tremendously well thought out book is difficult to put down. The running stories move rapidly together with amazing clarity and wit. The book follows the lives of several charactors and their relations with drugs. From the drug enslaved prostitute to the member of parliament pushing to have all drugs legalised. You'll finish this book with a mournful sense that you know the charactors stories in an intimate way. As well as hearing a commentary on the modern day war on drugs with such clarity that you feel astonished.

Tommy Hanson Rules

This was my first read or for that matter first exposure to Ben Elton. I was hooked in the very first paragraph, very funny and yes over the top characters. But that is what is fun about the book, a comical stereotypical handling of a very serious subject: Drugs and the possible effects of legalization of drugs. I have often re-read the exerps of the lead character Tommy Hanson the Rock Star. I am currently reading DEAD FAMOUS and will probably read STARK next. Buy HIGH SOCIETY, read it, enjoy it, good read for your next trip by airplane.

About the Author
Jack Moeller is retired from Oakland University after many distinguished years of excellence in teaching. He continues to be involved in the revision process of DEUTSCH HEUTE to ensure the quality and integrity of the program.

Thorsten Huth holds a PhD. in German Applied Linguistics from The University of Kansas and is a tenure-tracked Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Professor Huth's research interests are in Second Language Acquisition and Language Teacher Education.

Gisela Hoecherl-Alden teaches at the University of Maine, where she uses DEUTSCH HEUTE. She makes valuable contributions to the book based on her students' feedback and her own solid grasp of contemporary pedagogy.

Simone Berger, formerly an instructor at Tufts University, has returned to Germany. She provides invaluable input for authentic readings, realia, and contemporary German language.

A highly recommended book on meditation.

I have read many books on meditation and this was by far the most clear and concise book of them all. I especially enjoyed the mindfulness of breathing chapter. The author gives a step by step process on how to get to one pointed concentration, whereas most other authors begin there. I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about starting or enhancing their meditation practice.

Looking at the national state as both a form of governance and a powerful idea, she argues that the national state shapes the ways migrants conceive of themselves and the way they construct social identities.             The web of transnational interactions is complex, she emphasizes, and the exchange of information, persons, capital, goods, and political power expands state boundaries and affects populations in two countries. Transnationalism stretches the notion of citizenship.             Nearly two million Salvadorans live in the United States today, most arriving in the last two decades and half of them living in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The money they send "home" has come to replace traditional exports as the largest single source of foreign currency in El Salvador, and Salvadorans in the homeland look to the United States as a path to upward class mobility and increased wealth.             Baker-Cristales offers a grounded history of Salvadoran migration and examines the institutions and practices that facilitate migration to the United States and help migrants to bridge the geographic distance between the two countries. She analyzes rich ethnographic data on national identity--collected during a decade of fieldwork with Salvadoran migrants in Los Angeles--relating it to conceptions of belonging and exclusion and to the role of the national state in globalization.             This important work will enliven debates over globalization and international migration. It will be of interest to scholars of Central American studies, immigration, transnationalism, and global processes, as well as to those interested in the concept of the state.
