James M. Glaser is associate professor of political science and dean of undergraduate education for arts, sciences, and engineering at Tufts University. He is a frequent commentator on contemporary politics for the media.

It's nice to learn something

Many views of southern politics concentrate on the issue of race. Based on what I have seen and read, I believe this view is accurate in that many of the objections to contemporary policies seem based, although not explicitly on that subject. The objections may be disguised with "dog whistle" terminology, but I believe race is a major factor. That being said, this book seems to downplay the subject. In doing so, and on a positive note, the book brings up and, I think, emphasizes other traditional and cultural issues impacting on southern political behavior and it taught me a lot about these other effects. In this, it broadened my understanding on the matter and lessened, to an extent, the racial demonizing of the south. I still believe that race is a major determining factor in the state's rights, limited government attitude of the south, but it is not, I now realize, the only factor.
