About the Author
Susan Ruddick Bloom is a Professor of Art and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at McDaniel College in Maryland. She has a BFA and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and is well known for both her traditional wet darkroom alternative processes and her digital darkroom work. Sue has been teaching digital classes since the beginning of Photoshop and has used a Mac from the very first one on the market (128K, with a screen the size of an index card). Trained in drawing, painting, and printmaking, she was at one time a courtroom artist for television and newspapers. Her painterly skills enhance her photographic ones, and her images frequently combine techniques. Sue's work has been exhibited and collected widely.

Beyond my wildest expectations.

I am both impressed and overwhelmed by the amount of pertinent and useful information in this book. Every topic, chapter, and section is important--no filler, no repetition, nothing necessary left out, nothing unnecessary thrown in.

How my opinion dovetails with yours depends on the commonality of our experience and our intended purposes for getting this book. I am, primarily, a photographer both for business and pleasure. I am very competent in the use of Photoshop, and just got Painter as a Christmas gift (two weeks ago). I wish to start turning some photos into illustrations (line drawings, soft images, collages) but for my own use and pleasure, not for commercial purposes or public display. After seeing the book, I might (later) be seriously tempted to go beyond that, but there are so many options, so many styles, so many directions I would want to take that I'm overwhelmed by the choices.

However, while the book is not intended for beginners, a beginner who is familiar with at least one of the programs isn't going to find it difficult to wade right in and tackle a project. It's just a question of finding a simple one that applies to the type of photography you have in your collection.

I have to add that having a certain amount of artistic eye, skill, and background would be a big help because these projects cannot be approached in a purely mechanical way, regardless of how well you use Photoshop, Painter, or the additional programs, plug-ins, filter and action packs mentioned. The book merely provides the techniques, methodology, and inspiration.

Every step is amazingly well explained and illustrated. (Although it isn't done in the usual tutorial style so common for software users: numbered steps, captioned screen shots, the "recipe" laid out in sequence.) There are some more structured sections but, by and large, this is a purely narrative style in long blocks of paragraphs, as if you were learning with the teacher seated next to you and explaining as you go. This requires reading the entire section before you start, wrapping your head around the general theory, adding post-it tabs and highlighting the parts you need to pay attention to, and starting your project. I think that, for this type of photographic project, it's actually the ideal teaching method to use because it explains what you absolutely need to know, then lets you implement the idea your way.

I see absolutely no negatives in this book. It is clearly and intelligently written and well edited and organized. The content is fascinating, from the detailed and informative artist interviews to the full spectrum of styles and options offered to create art and collage based on photographs. I would have enjoyed reading it and learning from it just for the pleasure of it.

What this Book Is and What it Isn't!

I have both the first and second edition of this book and I would recommend this book if you are interested in the following:

1. You want to learn how to use your digital photographs and turn them into works that look more like paintings.
2. You want to learn how to take parts from your photos and combine them together into one digital image that looks more like a painting or collage than a photo.
3. You are interested in seeing a nice variety of images created by other contemporary digital artists.
4. You want a book that covers both Photoshop and Painter.
5. You are interested in learning more about the filters in Photoshop.

I would NOT recommend it for anyone who is primarily interested in learning how to paint digitally from scratch since almost every project in this book starts from a digital photograph with the exception of some of the artists in the "Inspiration" chapter.

Basically it gives directions on how to use a variety of different filters, brushes, etc., to convert and paint over a photograph to give it a more painterly appearance. Many of the finished examples are very beautiful--but if you are hoping to learn how to paint a painting from scratch--this book will not show you how.

The chapter on painting in Photoshop is actually titled "Painting in Photoshop with Your Photos." The chapter on Painting in Painter shows you how to use a variety of clone brushes to take a photo and turn it into a painting.

Bottomline: If you want to learn how to change photographs into paintings--get this book! I will give it 5 stars because it does that well.

(P.S. If you already have the first edition I don't think it is necessary to get this one since it is primary only the "Inspiration" chapter that changes very much.)

nice resource

This is one of the nicest books I've seen on the topic of creating digital paintings and collages from photographs and stock art. Many artists are interviewed and featured with their techniques. Instead of being a step by step guide to create the exact same effect, this book has suggestions for layers and tools to use. It's also not program specific which I really like. So if you're more comfortable in Painter than Photoshop, the techniques shown can be used.
Lots of photos show the progression of the images from photos and sketches to finished collages and paintings which makes it very easy to understand what effects the layers, tools and filters have.
While it's primarily written for people who already have a strong interest in these techniques, the book would also be a great inspiration to people who scrapbook in graphics programs as well. The collage ideas and tips are just wonderful.
If you want to get the most out of this, you should have a graphic tablet, a good camera and of course Photoshop or Painter.

Comprehensive, Easy-to-Understand, and Detailed

This is super comprehensive. To be fair, I already had a lot of experience with Lightroom 3. But this DVD added a few things to my arsenal of editing techniques. It also tightened up my workflow and opened my eyes to a few short cuts that I hadn't been using. Lightroom 4 is very powerful tool for photographers (I myself am a wedding photographer) and this DVD goes into great detail to make sure every feature is covered. I used to do a lot of my photo editing in Photoshop, but now I basically use Lightroom for almost everything and this has cut down my editing time a lot (probably at least by half). They explain things in an easy-to-understand way and I was able to follow through the entire thing within a week or so. The exercise files really helped, as I was able to follow along and learn by doing (rather than just reading or listening or watching). Cheers to the SLR Lounge team. Great Product.

Hands Down the Best Lightroom Resource Available

Lightroom is an intuitive software. So intuitive that it's easy to think that you don't need any tutorials or help learning it... and this is partly true. If you're just trying to color correct an image, add an vignette, fix the exposure, or clone out a couple of dust spots, you can just open it right up and start working away with out the manual and without Lightroom tutorials.

In fact, would not have ordered this Lightroom tutorial DVD if a friend didn't highly recommended because I was stuck in that very mindset. But now that I have it, I can't imagine using Lightroom without the tools, tips, and techniques that I learned. The most impressive lessons are the ones that teach you to mimic the looks that were previously only achievable in photoshop like HDR (high dynamic range) or Holga and Toy Camera looks and feels.

The only downside is that it can be a little bit wordy, as the instructors like to talk and they make sure the tutorials are for beginners as well as professionals. So basically even if you think you are just looking to fix basic things like the things I mentioned in the first paragraph, it's worth getting this DVD because it will open up your world to a whole new set of tips, tricks, techniques, looks, moods, feels and more. It's even gone as far as refreshing my passion for trying new things in my photography and seeing what I can do with it after-the-shot in Lightroom.

This is a "must have" disc for a beginner and amateur photographer.
It is very comprehensive and covers everything including the Identity Plate.
There are 15 modules, covering the basic set-up to advanced processing and also includes a bonus of advanced techniques and also the Map, Book, Slideshow, Print & Web modules.
Each module contains from two to nine chapters, easily understood and implemented.

This disc is very easy to follow and will take you from beginner to professional in a very short space of time.

The disc was originally purchased from "Amazon" but was found defective and was replaced by SLR Lounge.

A slice of real life -- Highly recommended

When their son nearly dies in a car accident, Julie and Russell Mathew suddenly shift priorities, centering their lives on their son. Their son Ben spends a month in a coma and more months in recovery. Gradually, their conversations seem to center only on the immediate challenges. Then the problems they've ignored or denied for years smolder into life when Russell announces he has quit his job as a professor in Vancouver so they can move to the tiny rural town in Saskatchewan where he grew up.
Angry and resentful that Russell makes such life altering decisions without discussing it with her first, Julie resigns herself to the move. She thrives on big city life, her quickly advancing career, and the amenities available in Vancouver. She does not look forward to the small, ordinary house they will live in or her nearby in-laws. But Ben's enthusiasm encourages her to give the move a try. Unfortunately, Russell's former girlfriend teaches at the school where Russell will teach, and suddenly Julie faces challenges and surprises she never expected.
Author C.J. Carmichael has a gift for capturing the heart of the challenges of life that bring her characters vividly alive. As readers know, love doesn't suddenly get perfect at the altar, despite the idealism of fiction. Romance authors are catching on, however, as Carmichael so gracefully demonstrates. Julie and Russell certainly learn that, if even if they have been together for years, secrets of the past, mistakes of the present, and personal insecurities have a way of presenting surprisingly new challenges. Secondary characters are likewise believable, especially Julie's mother-in-law who never quite stopped wishing for a different sort of wife for her beloved son. Despite these characters flaws, however, the people of Saltspring are beautifully realized, charmingly flawed, and spring vividly to life. Readers will certainly hope that Carmichael has many more books planned for this rural Saskatchewan town and the delightful characters that dwell there. SMALL-TOWN GIRL comes highly recommended.

Julie Matthew is an editor of a "home and garden" magazine called WEST COAST HOMES, and is doing quite well in her career. She also loves her life: she has a wonderful husband and son, friends that she can see socially from time to time, and lives in an area of the country that she feels comfortable in and enjoys. Then, one day her life is shattered when their son Ben is hurt in a serious car accident. He is lucky to be alive.
From that moment on, life changes for the Matthews. Russell, Julie's husband, decides that it is time to go back to his roots and take his family to a totally different environment. He feels that living the city life in Vancouver, British Columbia is not helping their family situation, and with Ben trying to recover from this horrible accident, Russell decides that living in his hometown of Chatsworth, Saskatchewan is the answer to their problems.
Ben and Russell are ecstatic about the new changes in their lives, but Julie is not. In fact, she's downright upset. She does not like the idea of living in a small town, nor does she like the idea of having to live in the same town as her in-laws.
With their marriage on shaky ground, the three of them make the move, with Julie begrudgingly going along with them. Julie is asked to stay on as editor and telecommute from her new home, flying to Vancouver only in the event of important meetings. But when she's asked to take over for her departing boss who has found a more lucrative job, Julie has every mind to take her boss's job, and move back to Vancouver where she was so much happier. But what about her marriage? Julie is torn between the man she loves, the child that is her life, and her own needs and wants. And when an old girlfriend of Russell's makes her way back into his life, Julie does not know what to think.

Second Chance

Six years ago Carlo Saracini had flung those words at Jessica. She'd fought him to the last, but now she faced a choice: three months in Carlo's bed, or her father would go to gaol. Maybe Jessica had been forced to her knees, but she would never give in - because she also remembered Carlo's final vow: "I will never forgive you."

Typical of L. Graham's stories and not too bad. This heroine has money, or comes from it anyway. The hero is Greek and typical Alpha, but not as mean as some of Ms. Graham's men usually are. Jessica met Carlo while she was engaged, and wouldn't break her engagement to be with Carlo. Six years later she's a widow and her father is in trouble. Yes there is another female lusting after Carlo and will Jessica tell him the truth about her marriage? If you like this author, you'll like this story.

this guy has serious dominate issues

He meets her while she is engaged to someone else and he hates her guts because she didn't dump her fiance for him!!!! In fact he spits his hatred at her and promises revenge.....because it's not him that she is marrying. This guy is so consumed with his need to dominate and humiliate h on every level, it's wonder he doesn't drop dead from imploded rage.

His threats for her father are the low life kind and then he is shocked and flies into another rage because she doesn't feel safe telling him about her father's near suicide. He shouts at her does she really think that badly of him that she thinks he'll continue to force his sexual attentions on her while her father (you know, the one he threatened to send to jail) is in hospital........ahhhhh, ummmm, let me think.....

But of course he is such a TOOL because he is (wait for it) in LOVE(!!!!). Yes deeply, truly, irrevocably which should now explain why he is such a bullying jerk. Too stupid for words.

Overall, the book is ok, just a little thin on the plot. I think that is what really put me off the book. However, I did read it and I don't hate it so I will recommend it. It does have good chemistry once everything starts moving along.

Dr. M. O. Faruque Sarker

Dr. M. O. Faruque Sarker is a software architect, and DevOps engineer who's currently working at University College London (UCL), United Kingdom. In recent years, he has been leading a number of Python software development projects, including the implementation of an interactive webbased scientific computing framework using the IPython Notebook service at UCL. He is a specialist and an expert in open source technologies, for example, elearning and web application platforms, agile software development, and IT service management methodologies such as DSDM Atern and ITIL Service management frameworks. Dr. Sarker received his PhD in multirobot systems from University of South Wales where he adopted various Python open source projects for integrating the complex software infrastructure of one of the biggest multirobot experiment testbeds in UK. To drive his multirobot fleet, he designed and implemented a decoupled software architecture called hybrid eventdriven architecture on DBus. Since 1999, he has been deploying Linux and open source software in commercial companies, educational institutions, and multinational consultancies. He was invited to work on the Google Summer of Code 2009/2010 programs for contributing to the BlueZ and TahoeLAFS open source projects. Currently, Dr. Sarker has a research interest in selforganized cloud architecture. In his spare time, he likes to play with his little daughter, Ayesha, and is keen to learn about childcentric educational methods that can empower children with selfconfidence by engaging with their environment.

Whether you need it depends on your tasks

Python Network Cookbook provides you with the samples related to the range of networking topics. Whether you will benefit from it depends heavily on your tasks. The point here is that the range of samples is really huge. Starting with data manipulation required for network based transfer, through socket based networking, interfaces related samples, IPv6, to topics covering HTTP, IMAP, and web services.

Now, don’t get me wrong, but the percentage of the book you will benefit from heavily depends on your day to day work. If you deal with http stuff all the time, you will find half of the book entertaining. On the other hand, if you do some low level development and you want to design your own means of transportation based on sockets, first half of the book will be of your interest.

What I have found particularly useful for me were the http related samples, web service handling, and port forwarding. But these are things that I can benefit from directly.

For sure, this book will be really interesting for the students who have to deal with networking related lectures. You will be able to jump directly into virtually any network related topic.

The book has one drawback. Some of the samples are Linux based. I am pretty sure you can use them anyway by using MacPorts or Cygwin, but still, it might be slightly frustrating for Windows and Mac users that some samples are marked as “Linux only”.

Before you buy the book, make a simple calculation how much you can benefit from it. If you decide that more than half of the book is useful for you – go ahead.

Python Network Programming Cookbook – review.

Reviewing books can be a tedious task in it self, and my expectations for reviewing Dr. M. O. Faruque Sarker's Python Network Programming Cookbook, was beyond the exhaustion level even before I had turned the first page. After all - it is a book about network programming, sockets, Client/Server Programming and a lot more – which usually not belongs to the horror literature, but merely is a literal sleeping pill.

It took me only a few minutes of reading to see, that this time my expectations would not be fulfilled. With a rarely seen clarity, Dr. M. O. Faruque Sarker describes the task, presents the solution and explains the functionality of each problem in plain words, so everybody can understand what the code actually do. I am virtually on the edge to state, that even without previous knowledge of Python, you can benefit from the examples, but it does help to know at least the basics.

The book is a cookbook in the best sense. You can easily read selected chapters without prior knowledge of previous chapters and, each chapter clarify which modules are needed before presenting the examples. This is absolutely a great plus and combined with an easy to read concept, this book is one of the best I have seen in years. Dr. M. O. Faruque Sarker's way of explaining each example can be compared to the concept: Hit and run. You hit the problem, see the solution and runs for the nearest laptop to derive even more sophisticated solutions, with you newly acquired knowledge.

This book is a must for Python programmers that want to explore the versatility of Python and take another step forward in the Python world.

However, before adding this book to your library a little warning, which also was missing on the books cover: According to the standard Python cookbook, some of the content I the book can be extremely addictive.

Useful for a dilettante Perl programmer

Unlike the PHP pocket reference, this one indexes the contents, and takes more care in describing the function calls that it covers.
I know enough Perl to lift good, reusable code. So the front end of this book, which is concise and thoughfully written, refreshes my grasp of the details as I dig through. That's nice.
It would be a better book if it would lay flat on any page.

Valuable for a most interesting historical anecdote

Years ago, I opened States of Matter looking for a text to supplement to a course in Statistical Physics I was taking. What I took away was different and far more valuable: a new method -- dimensional analysis -- of simplifying and solving complex problems of physics. Goodstein presents this method as a brief historical anecdote, one entertaining and memorable. In short, Goodstein showed that sometimes one does well to ignore the detail of a problem and instead focus on the data at hand. Let the data and their units (or, dimensions) lead one to guessing the answer.

Here is the anecdote in its entirety. You will find it at the beginning of chapter 6, "Critical Phenomenon and Phase Transitions", pp. 436-7 in the Dover edition.

Dimensional analysis is a technique by means of which it is possible to learn a great deal about very complicated situations if you can put your finger on the essential features of the problem. An example is the well-known story of how G.I. Taylor was able to deduce the yield of the first nuclear explosion from a series of photographs of the expanding fireball in Life magazine. He realized that he was seeing a strong shock expanding into an undisturbed medium. The pictures gave him the radius as a function of time, r(t). All that could be important in determining r(t) was the initial energy release, E, and the density of the undisturbed medium, p (i.e., the Greek letter rho). The radius, with the dimension of length, depended on E, p, and t, and he constructed a distance out of these quantities. E and p had to come in as E/p to cancel the mass. E/p has the dimensions (length)^5 / (time)^2, so the only possible combination was

r(t) ~ ( (E / p) t^2 )^(1/5)

A log-log plot of r versus t (measured from the pictures) gave a slope of 2/5, which checked the theory, and E/p could be obtained from extrapolation to the value of log r when log t = 0. Since p, the density of undisturbed air, was known, E was determined to within a factor of order one. For the practitioner of the art of dimensional analysis, the nation's deepest secret had been published in Life magazine. [End of Goodstein anecdote.]

This anecdote can be worked as an example. For the density of air at 5000 feet (i.e., roughly the elevation of Alamogordo, NM, near where the explosion happened) I used 1.05 kg/m^3, which is extrapolated from 1.2 kg/m^3 value at sea level. To convert units of energy from joules (J) to kilotons of TNT, I used 4600 J per gram TNT. There is one difficulty. Life magazine never published the pictures. (Well, if they did, my extensive searching never turned them up.) However, I did find them elsewhere on the internet (the history section of the Los Alamos National Lab's website). Using an image editing program, I measured the following radii from the panel of four photos: 75, 109, 182, and 245 meters for times of 6, 16, 53, and 100 milliseconds. Least squares fitting of log distance vs log time yields a slope of 0.419, which well approximates the expected 2/5. Solving for E yields an explosive yields of 23 kilotons (kT), which is close the officially reported yield of 20 to 22 kT.

This colorful anecdote is something one would expect from Richard Feynman. So it is hardly surprising that Goodstein wrote the book at Caltech when Feynman was there. Perhaps Goodstein learned from Feynman, or vice versa.
