Informative, Entertaining and an Overall Great Read

Smartly written with a hilarious sense of humor. You're able to learn a great deal of factual science without feeling like you're reading an ordinary science book. Even if you're not a huge fan of insects and zoology, the random scientific facts about these creatures make great conversation tidbits with friends and family. Great read for anybody!

OMG this book is wonderful

This book is amazing---deeply reported, wonderfully told, and laugh-out-loud funny. Be warned -- it will take you twice as long as you expect to read this book, because you will be constantly stopping to read passages aloud to your spouse, kids, roommates, random strangers, whatever. It's that good. Matt Simon is a singular talent. If you have even a passing interest in nature or the wondrous world of biology, read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Fun and Informative

The tone on the book is very familiar, very conversational style. It was approachable and at times funny. This is one I'd say older kids may enjoy, though in all fairness the author is very clear on their views of religion/creationism so if that's a concern you might want to flip through it yourself. Otherwise it was full of fun and frankly some of the weirdest creatures I've seen. A lot of them I knew about or had read about in the past but this put new information into play. Definitely a fun read for a nature lover.

George R.R. Martin Interviews Bernard Cornwell

George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally since then. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid '90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since.

George R.R. Martin: It has long been my contention that the historical novel and the epic fantasy are sisters under the skin, that the two genres have much in common. My series owes a lot to the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and the other great fantasists who came before me, but I've also read and enjoyed the work of historical novelists. Who were your own influences? Was historical fiction always your great passion? Did you ever read fantasy?

Bernard Cornwell: You're right--fantasy and historical novels are twins--and I've never been fond of the label 'fantasy' which is too broad a brush and has a fey quality. It seems to me you write historical novels in an invented world which is grounded in historical reality (if the books are set in the future then 'fantasy' magically becomes sci-fi). So I've been influenced by all three: fantasy, sci-fi and historical novels, though the largest influence has to be C.S. Forester's Hornblower books.

Martin: A familiar theme in a lot of epic fantasy is the conflict between good and evil. The villains are often Dark Lords of various ilks, with demonic henchmen and hordes of twisted, malformed underlings clad in black. The heroes are noble, brave, chaste, and very fair to look upon. Yes, Tolkien made something grand and glorious from that, but in the hands of lesser writers, well ... let's just say that sort of fantasy has lost its interest for me. It is the grey characters who interest me the most. Those are the sort I prefer to write about... and read about. It seems to me that you share that affinity. What is it about flawed characters that makes them more interesting than conventional heroes?

Cornwell: Maybe all our heroes are reflections of ourselves? I'm not claiming to be Richard Sharpe (God forbid), but I'm sure parts of my personality leaked into him (he's very grumpy in the morning). And perhaps flawed characters are more interesting because they are forced to make a choice… a conventionally good character will always do the moral, right thing. Boring. Sharpe often does the right thing, but usually for the wrong reasons, and that's much more interesting!

Martin: When Tolkien began writing The Lord of the Rings, it was intended as a sequel to The Hobbit. "The tale grew in the telling," he said later, when LOTR had grown into the trilogy we know today. That's a line I have often had occasion to quote over the years, as my own Song of Ice and Fire swelled from the three books I had originally sold to the seven books (five published, two more to write) I'm now producing. Much of your own work has taken the form of multi-part series. Are your tales too 'growing in the telling,' or do you know how long your journeys will take before you set out? Did you know how many books Uhtred's story would require, when you first sat down to write about him?

Cornwell: No idea! I don't even know what will happen in the next chapter, let alone the next book, and have no idea how many books there might be in a series. E.L. Doctorow said something I like which is that writing a novel is a bit like driving down an unfamiliar country road at night and you can only see as far ahead as your somewhat feeble headlamps show. I write into the darkness. I guess the joy of reading a book is to find out what happens, and for me that's the joy of writing one too!

Another fine addition to an outstanding series

Another fine entry in the series.

While this seems to follow a pretty solid pattern Cornwell has established for these books, this one was an exceptionally smooth and easy read.While it can be said that Uthred is nearly superhuman (and despite knowing that there is another book in the series) I will admit I was honestly worried near the end that Uthred could fall. The final battle I particularly enjoyed because it really set the situation up much like real war: a confusing mess, violent and loud, and never certain of the outcome. I also liked that others were given the opportunity to shine: a major battle was clearly won by the acts of others, and in fact you could say rescued Uthred, but still Uthred played a major, major role.

One thing I particularly liked was that Uthred is starting to feel his age. Much like me I am getting older and things just don't work as well, people mention your age, etc. While it may be a silent shadow over you, your age is constantly there as you get older and the reminders scattered throughout the book were placed perfectly to start shaping the idea that yes, Uthred will die some sad day in the future.

If you have enjoyed the other books in the series I would recommend this one as well, it continues the story well and provides an interesting look at the events that helped shape England.

Fantastic historical fiction series telling of Saxon-Danish wars in the 800s

I am hooked on this historical fiction series, and thank Bernard Cornwell for researching and writing it. It follows one male warrior throughout his lifetime, a child of English middle-level nobility who was raised by invading Danes in England during the 800s. I went looking for a good historical fiction book about this period after I took an Ancestry.com DNA test and discovered that instead of 25% Danish ancestry as I was expecting, I had 41%. Wanted to find out why that was, and this series explains how Danes came to England to look for arable land, since Denmark at that time didn't have enough to go around. And of course, the Saxons didn't want to give up their land, and it's taking 8 or 9 books to tell the story. Lots of fighting, which I don't normally like, but for some reason, this series is really riveting. I will be sad when it's over.

A good bloody tale.

The story is complex and well thought out as Cornwell always is . However this time he relies too much on vivid depictions of violent, gory battles and less on the story. He takes us through the next segment of this turbulent period of English history to set the stage for King Knut.

A new title for this revamping of the pioneering science �comic,� DNA for Beginners (1983), is appropriate because so much productive research has occurred since the first edition, as the revision�s peppering of post-1983 dates confirms. Yet the book�s core�illustrated technical explanations of DNA replication, gene expression, cloning and sequencing genes, cloning organisms, making tissue from stem cells, and other processes�is probably little altered and distinguishes the book from its most obvious look-alike, The Stuff of Life (2009), by Mark Schultz, Kevin Cannon, and Zander Cannon. While Stuff is a genuine graphic novel�with plot, characters, through-drawn text, and all�DNA was written first and then illustrated. Although he hardly eschews cartooning and caricature, including inspired parodies of great cartoonists (Daumier, Tenniel, Crumb, etc.), Van Loon functions far more as an ace creator of visual analogies of physical realities too small to be seen unaided or understood even when exponentially magnified. If you've ever thought about cloning yourself....

If you've ever contemplated cloning yourself in order to be in two places at once, this book is essential to understanding how to make that happen.
A riotous, Monty Python-esque aesthetic applied to what might otherwise be very dry strands of essential information.
Even a belligerent teenager could appreciate this one.

The rough cutting edge

For quite awhile, I have been searching for a decent book covering the latest discoveries and theories in genetics. Most books that I have read are either too basic in their description of genetics or our too boring to read. This book was exactly what I have been wanting.

The book proved fun to read. But more importantly, it contains up to date information about genetics such gene splicing, methylation of DNA strands (epigenetics), and the diversity of antibodies from random gene combination. I have yet to find another book that attempts to explain all of these concepts to the layman.

I strongly appreciate the use of pictures and figures to convey the important ideas. Each picture in this book really is worth 1000 words.

Sadly, the book falls apart at the end. The last 15 pages contain no pictures. There is just text. Furthermore, the material in the last 15 pages is presented in a disorganized random fashion. But, I am not complaining because I attribute the rough ending to the book to the fact that the field of genetics is continually evolving. Therefore, there cannot really be an ending to the story. I sincerely hope that a revised version of the book with a cleaned up ending eventually published. With a little improvement, this book could become a classic text in the field of genetics.

A clear and sensible guide to maintaining long-term lifestyle changes

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book under the Vine Voices Amazon co.uk scheme but these are my honest and considered opinions.
This is a well-written guide to improving willpower, breaking habits and being able to impose self-control. Unlike many self-help books psychologist and therapist Frank Ryan steers free of gung-ho motivational psychobabble.

It is full of sensible suggestions on how to maintain motivation, how to overcome 'wobbles' with the accompanying negative mindsets and in general, how to improve one's skills in self-control - viewing self control as a skill that can be gained rather than something that you have or just don't have.

It isn't a guide to overcoming serious drug addictions, and this is made clear right at the outset; this is something that can only be realistically handled with the intervention of medical practictioners.

There is extensive reference to up to date research, presented in a highly readable and accessible manner, as one has come to expect from 'Dummies' books, designed to inform and encourage. It incorporates the usefulness of mindfulness - being fully in the here and now - as a way of managing negative feelings.

The benefits of incorporating a healthier lifestyle as a long term way of improving willpower in general are not understated; exercise increases endorphins and you feel better in general for doing it, it becomes a reward in itself and boosts your ability to maintain other healthier choices.
Frank Ryan doesn't state the obvious or insult the intelligence of his readers at any time, this is a book of genuine value and interest. Highly recommended

I am very happy with my purchase of this amazing fitness book. I am more of a fan of Lucy now knowing about her struggles and what it has taken to get her there. Needless to say, there is much wisdom and Lucy ghost wrote a great book with a great mix of personal beauty tips, life experiences, TOWIE stories, and fitness and nutrition advice, which all is very accurate and helpful. Thank you Lucy, i hope you write more books. :)

A must-read! Totally opened my eyes.

I re-purchased this book after realizing that it totally shifted the way I view the world when I first read it back in 2001. Even though it's from the 1980's, Angela Davis's words are still relevant, and especially illuminating for me, as a white woman. I just really loved and appreciated this book and am excited to read it again. I also remember reading "Ain't I A Woman?" by bell hooks at that time, and recommend reading the two in tandem. Great insights from two of this country's preeminent thinkers.

I read this book for my Women in Politics class.

This book's central focus is intersectional feminism. It highlights how gender, race, and class factor into inequality. This book started off incredibly strong, but lost its way a bit in the later chapters. However, still a fantastic and insightful book.
