Arctic Mirrors: Russia and the Small Peoples of the North (Cornell Paperbacks), by Yuri Slezkine

For over five hundred years the Russians wondered what kind of people their Arctic and sub-Arctic subjects were. "They have mouths between their shoulders and eyes in their chests," reported a fifteenth-century tale. "They rove around, live of their own free will, and beat the Russian people," complained a seventeenth-century Cossack. "Their actions are exceedingly rude. They do not take off their hats and do not bow to each other," huffed an eighteenth-century scholar. They are "children of nature" and "guardians of ecological balance," rhapsodized early nineteenth-century and late twentieth-century romantics. Even the Bolsheviks, who categorized the circumpolar foragers as "authentic proletarians," were repeatedly puzzled by the "peoples from the late Neolithic period who, by virtue of their extreme backwardness, cannot keep up either economically or culturally with the furious speed of the emerging socialist society."

Whether described as brutes, aliens, or endangered indigenous populations, the so-called small peoples of the north have consistently remained a point of contrast for speculations on Russian identity and a convenient testing ground for policies and images that grew out of these speculations. In Arctic Mirrors, a vividly rendered history of circumpolar peoples in the Russian empire and the Russian mind, Yuri Slezkine offers the first in-depth interpretation of this relationship. No other book in any language links the history of a colonized non-Russian people to the full sweep of Russian intellectual and cultural history. Enhancing his account with vintage prints and photographs, Slezkine reenacts the procession of Russian fur traders, missionaries, tsarist bureaucrats, radical intellectuals, professional ethnographers, and commissars who struggled to reform and conceptualize this most "alien" of their subject populations.

Slezkine reconstructs from a vast range of sources the successive official policies and prevailing attitudes toward the northern peoples, interweaving the resonant narratives of Russian and indigenous contemporaries with the extravagant images of popular Russian fiction. As he examines the many ironies and ambivalences involved in successive Russian attempts to overcome northern—and hence their own—otherness, Slezkine explores the wider issues of ethnic identity, cultural change, nationalist rhetoric, and not-so European colonialism.

From Library Journal
The "small peoples" are the 26 indigenous ethnic groups of the Arctic tundra and subarctic taiga whose traditions lie in hunting, trapping, fishing, and reindeer herding. Historian Slezkine studies the relationships between these groups and the Russians, who entered their land in the 11th century, colonized it, and transformed it over the centuries thereafter. By examining these circumpolar peoples through Russian historical documents and literary accounts, Slezkine brings out images that become reflections of the Russians themselves. He is interested in both the political and intellectual nature of the encounter and seeks to reveal the importance of the complexities of this relationship through history. The study is thoroughly researched and well written for the scholar in the field or the informed reader. For larger libraries and regional collections.

From Booklist
Since the groundbreaking 1922 silent documentary Nanook of the North, not much has changed in the everyday life of the Alaskan Eskimos. Nor has much changed for the Arctic people of Russia, despite the incursions of many armies, both military and missionary. Despite their obvious primitiveness, the small Russian tribes of the North saw perhaps lesser levels of brutality by the Stalin regime and beyond, and the most obvious reason for this is the weather. Slezkine spends some time on the northerners' ability to cope with the climate, but mostly concentrates on the changing face of the Soviet Union in the microcosm of the northern people: from "savage Indians" to the slow evolution from icebound hunters and trappers to industrialized laborers. The book is an intellectual treatise, and occasionally Slezkine's clinical language can be as dry as a Siberian plain, but his descriptions of the trials of the northern Russians help make this book an invaluable look at the people the totalitarian Soviets forgot. Joe Collins

Review

"In this great book, Slezkine has provided us with a comprehensive history of the encounter between the Russians and the indigenous peoples of the Arctic and northwestern Pacific. . . . Arctic Mirrors has already become required reading for anyone interested in the history or anthropology of Siberia, and it will soon establish itself as an invaluable contribution to the growing field of studies on the newly independent states."―American Anthropologist

"Slezkine concentrates on the changing face of the Soviet Union in the microcosm of the northern people: from 'savage Indians' to the slow evolution from icebound hunters and trappers to industrialized laborers. . . . An invaluable look at the people the totalitarian Soviets forgot."―Booklist

"This fascinating and authoritative book covers the history of relations between Russian civilization and the hunter-gatherer peoples of northern Eurasia. Slezkine charts changing Russian policies toward these circumpolar cultures beginning with the fur trade . . . in the eleventh century, through the expansion of the Russian empire under the tsars, to the modernization policies of the Soviets. He argues that attention to this kind of history reveals as much about the construction of Russian identity as it does about the cultural identity of the northern 'others.' This book is an important addition to the growing literature on comparative colonialisms."―Virginia Quarterly Review

"This book sheds light on the history of a neglected people and reveals Russian self-perceptions refracted through the prism of their attitudes toward the natives. . . . It is a beautifully written, fascinating book that greatly enhances our understanding of Russia as a multiethnic state."―American Historical Review

"Engagingly written and with much ironic wit throughout, Arctic Mirrors is a pleasure to read."―Journal of Historical Geography

"This enlightening book should be read by all interested in the (former) Soviet north, northern people in general, or the relation between nation states and the various 'small peoples' of the earth."―Ethnohistory

"Slezkine has used a massive array of sources to write a fascinating history of northern Siberia's natives and their relations with the Russians over the last four centuries."―W. Bruce Lincoln, Northern Illinois University

Native Siberians as Russian foil
By Alexander D. King
This is a great book. Slezkine has provided us with a comprehensive history of the encounter between the Russians and the indigenous peoples of the Arctic and northwestern Pacific. Based on original archival sources whenever possible, the narrative is thick in detail and rich in analysis. I enjoyed his writing style, but his arguments can be difficult to follow for non-academics. He focuses on the “numerically small” peoples of Siberia, who are often subordinated in accounts which privilege ethnic Russians, Komi and Sakha (Yakut) peoples in the east. Believing that ideas matter, Slezkine grounds the events and policies of his history in the intellectual fashions current at the time. Thus, we get a cultural and intellectual history of conquest and administration structuring the narrative which tacks between the Russian and native Siberian points of view.
Cossacks did not establish any “New Russia” because they did not understand Siberia as a discovery. The Princes of Rus long knew about “Ostiaks” to the east, and sixteenth century empire-building consisted of conquering foreign peoples throughout the continuous Eurasian landmass. There were no breakthroughs across great divides like the Atlantic. At the same time, the conquerors knew they were among foreign peoples, and it was imperative to get the “real” names from the locals. Foreigners were expected to remain foreign; they had only to pay their tribute and express appropriate obsequies to the Tsar, who discouraged the church from converting foreign tribute-payers to Orthodox Russians. Not that Russian conquest was less brutal than Spanish or English conquests elsewhere, but early Russian conquerors’ open-ended world-view did not force new people and territories into closed, Old World categories.
The rules of the relationship changed during the era of Peter the Great. With the coming of the Enlightenment to Russia, “foreigners” (of a different land) became “aliens” (of different birth). Peter’s fascination with western science led to several scientific expeditions into the north and the east to enumerate and classify everything (and every one) under the dominion of the Tsar. Groups were distinguished by language in a typology of peoples that has persisted to the present day. This second encounter “between the Russian and the native northerners was that between perfection and crudity” (p. 56). German anti-primitivism held sway in Russian thought, and the savages were certainly not noble.
By the close of the eighteenth century the increasing currency of the French Encyclopedists in intellectual circles paralleled the rise of Russian sentimentalism, and a different picture of natives emerged. As disease and warfare decimated the tribute payers, they became ennobled and in need of “protection.” Under Alexander I, reformers established the first comprehensive statement of global policy on the natives with the Statute of Alien Administration in Siberia in 1822. Classifying all (non-Russian) peoples into one of three categories (settled, nomadic, or wanderers), this statute structured native status for the next one hundred years.
Arctic Mirrors presents the story of the rise and fall of Russian anthropology for the first time. This is a significant contribution to the history of anthropology as an international discipline. More than half of the book deals with the Soviet period. Slezkine offers a lucid analysis of the surreal logic of Stalinist social policy and social science, where bureaucrats and scientists alike were often forced to recant truths they adamantly defended only months before in order to save their skins. He also traces the current nationalist ideology largely responsible for the breakup of the Soviet Union to the conscious and consistent ethnic policies of Lenin and Stalin, another legacy of romantic nationalism of the nineteenth century.
Slezkine succeeds in presenting the complexities of a complex encounter. The natives of the north are not passive dupes or innocent victims. Arctic Mirrors has already become required reading for anyone interested in the history or anthropology of Siberia, and it will soon establish itself as an invaluable contribution to the growing field of studies on the Newly Independent States. It also points up interesting parallels and contrasts with other European empires in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

A Must read
By Seth J. Frantzman
This must read opens the door on the many 'small' peoples of Russias North, who live in Siberia and have for thousands of years, comparable to the native Americans, they were crushed and moved around in soviet times, wiht many different methods applied to make them 'russian' 'christian' or good 'socialists'. This is an excellent account and a great eye opener to the vastness and diversity of the Russian landscape, a tragedy unto itself but the people will be preserved through accounts such as this.

Siberia as a Problem
By Benjamin Trovato
In contrast to Forsyth's History of the Native Peoples of Siberia, this is Siberia as seen by the bureaucrats and thinkers who tried to administer and understand it. There are many detailed quotes and anecdotes, but it does not add up to a coherent history. For the beginner, there is not enough background on who and where the peoples were. Students of the soviet period will be interested the the problem of collectivizing nomadic hunters. So: a good backup, but read Forsyth first.

Writing Performative Shakespeares: New Forms for Performance Criticism, by Rob Conkie

This innovative study offers a genuinely groundbreaking approach to Shakespeare in performance. Six chapters work like case studies, each highly creative in terms of visual form and structure - including puzzles, comics and pinboards - inviting the reader into playful engagement with the performative dimensions of Shakespearean production. The case studies include discussion of training and rehearsal processes; the materiality of the performance event and its various embodiments; the intertextual citations through which productions make meaning; and, in response to all of this, the multiplicity and variety of audience perspectives and interpretations. Conkie's production choices range from original practices to politicised adaptations, small-scale workshops to multimedia spectacles, offering inventive analyses of what Shakespeare might mean, or can be made to mean, at particular times and in specific places, at the start of the twenty-first century.

Review
"This is an ambitious and innovative book, which breaks genuinely new ground in Shakespeare performance studies, and which will make a significant contribution to the field ... There are plenty of Shakespeareans who work practically, and many who work in conversation with professional practitioners, but relatively few who subject this experience to the kind of searching interrogation that is found here ... This is a terrifically enjoyable and provocative read, one that suggests new avenues of enquiry and new ways of navigating them."
Robert Shaughnessy, University of Kent

Surprisingly "unputdownable"!
By amyinbarc
This book is a surprisingly warm and inspirational read, and it really is "unputdownable" (as Bristol's version of Time Out put it). Far from a dry textbook account of pupils' lives after school, it is really a collection of short autobiographies by very interesting, warm, and vibrant people who have lived life to the full, unfettered by the type of insecure baggage that can attach itself to children in more mainstream education. I started reading it just as I was beginning to think that I needed to be more authoritarian with my 3 yr old in order to get him to be adequately 'obedient'. I feel genuinely grateful to have read this book in time to realise that children must at all times be treated with respect - obviously not over-indulged, which isn't what it's about either- but that they should be gently guided and nurtured so that their own personalities can flourish, and always treated with respect in order to generate and receive their reciprocal respect, rather than trying to physically or psychologically beat it into them! This respect is what the pupils in After Summerhill (one from each decade of it's 90 yrs in existence) experienced and their lives and personalities clearly blossomed for them as a result. I recommend it to anyone interested in children, education, human well-being, or just interested in a good read - it's great!

Meets the Purpose
By DmitryS
This book did provide interviews with Summerhill alumni from different generations and provide their look back and thoughts on their time at Summerhill, and how the post-Summerhill life treated them. The main interviews were conducted during mid 1990 with the short post-script in 2011. If you are considering any of the progressive/democratic schools for your kid, I recommend reading this book as a part of your research.

Kind of drags
By Gina M. Harris
It was good to get some perspective from people who had gone through the school, but a lot of the accounts wandered and dragged. This makes the book kind of monotonous considering that many of these subjects have had fairly interesting lives.

The thing that I probably found most interesting is that many of the former students said that they knew other students felt one way, but they did not, and that they saw different strengths and weaknesses with the system that kind of makes me wonder if some of the concepts used by Summerhill really don't make that much difference.

The biggest thing that the school did well was probably fostering independence and adaptability, but I suspect those things could happen in other ways as well.

Well written book
By Ferenc
I bought this book to preapre for a major interview. I think it gives you a good overall description
of the Treasy Management. If you have a few days for cramming for an interview then this is the way to go.

It also helps that the autohor is a CPA. May be the hedging part could be a little bit more detailed but, i
think the goal of the author was to give you a general description instead of getting into very detailed
strategies.

I am sure you will find this book useful as i did!

A pioneering study in domestic violence
By Christopher M. MacNeil
The 1984 NBC telepic with Farrah Fawcett probably got more attention than Faith McNulty's book on which it was inspired. In the realm of "Men, Women and Rape," still regarded as the definitive study of rape as an act of violence, "The Burning Bed" does likewise on the subject of domestic violence. Based on the 1970's trial of a battered wife and mother who doused her passed out, drunken husband with gasoline before sending him off in flames, McNulty calls attention to the shame and silence with which the subject of spousal abuse was given, even in that era. The author does a masterful job in detailing the victim's years of physical and mental abuse, so much and so many that triggered what we now call post-traumatic stress or battered wife syndromes. But without those clinical identifications and before it become vogue not to have to be beaten, the wife and mother here is charged with premediated murder, and her only legal defense then was a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. That that was the only plea victims of violence had, in modern history, is shameful unto itself, and McNulty's book doesn't pooh-pooh the subject and confronts it openly and critically. In many respects, the success of the TV adaptation overshadowed the actual book, and that's a shame. Even more than in the dramatization, the book delves into the deepest and darkest pits of domestic violence, brings it to light and commands the judicial system and private citizenry to demand that the matter become a public policy issue. Obviously, McNulty's position paid off. Now, unlike then, the victims of domestic crimes really do have a choice, and that choice no longer is solely physical retaliation against the perpetrator.

Enough
By Jessica Adams
When is enough, enough? For Francine Hughes it took years of abuse and loneliness for her to realize that she had had enough. The Burning Bed was one of the inspirational books that I have ever read. For a young woman, Mrs. Hughes was so courageous. I admire her strength. After years of being beaten by the hands of her husband, Francine retaliates and while her husband is sleeping, starts a fire in their bed. For years she had come so close to death that the thought of dying didn't even scare her; it was like she had hoped for it to come. But after bearing four of his children, she had something to live for. Lonely and afraid she did the only thing she could do. Now facing murder charges Francine is forced to go back to her battered life and let the world know of her sorrow. The Burning Bed follows her through her long trial and the outcome leaves you breathless.

Essential Reading
By A Customer
The Burning Bed, a book by Faith McNulty, describes the life of a battered housewife and mother. Written from Francine Hughes' point of view, this book shows exactly why it is so hard to leave someone you love. The book doesn't try to convince you to take sides, it just states the facts and lets you decide for yourself. The book also goes into great detail about Francines' trial and her life after this crime. I would recommend this book to any reader, male or female. I think The Burning Bed is essential reading for everyone.

Amazon.com Review
What really happened in the Marabar caves? This is the mystery at the heart of E.M. Forster's 1924 novel, A Passage to India, the puzzle that sets in motion events highlighting an even larger question: Can an Englishman and an Indian be friends?

"It is impossible here," an Indian character tells his friend, Dr. Aziz, early in the novel. "They come out intending to be gentlemen, and are told it will not do.... Why, I remember when Turton came out first. It was in another part of the Province. You fellows will not believe me, but I have driven with Turton in his carriage--Turton! Oh yes, we were once quite intimate. He has shown me his stamp collection.

"He would expect you to steal it now. Turton! But red-nosed boy will be far worse than Turton!

"I do not think so. They all become exactly the same, not worse, not better. I give any Englishman two years, be he Turton or Burton. It is only the difference of a letter. And I give any Englishwoman six months. All are exactly alike." Written while England was still firmly in control of India, Forster's novel follows the fortunes of three English newcomers to India--Miss Adela Quested, Mrs. Moore, and Cyril Fielding--and the Indian, Dr. Aziz, with whom they cross destinies. The idea of true friendship between the races was a radical one in Forster's time, and he makes it abundantly clear that it was not one that either side welcomed. If Aziz's friend, Hamidullah, believed it impossible, the British representatives of the Raj were equally discouraging. "Why, the kindest thing one can do to a native is to let him die," said Mrs. Callendar.
"How if he went to heaven?" asked Mrs. Moore, with a gentle but crooked smile.
"He can go where he likes as long as he doesn't come near me. They give me the creeps." Despite their countrymen's disapproval, Miss Quested, Mrs. Moore, and Mr. Fielding are all eager to meet Indians, and in Dr. Aziz they find a perfect companion: educated, westernized, and open-minded. Slowly, the friendships ripen, especially between Aziz and Fielding. Having created the possibility of esteem based on trust and mutual affection, Forster then subjects it to the crucible of racial hatred: during a visit to the famed Marabar caves, Miss Quested accuses Dr. Aziz of sexually assaulting her, then later recants during the frenzied trial that follows. Under such circumstances, affection proves to be a very fragile commodity indeed.

Arguably Forster's greatest novel, A Passage to India limns a troubling portrait of colonialism at its worst, and is remarkable for the complexity of its characters. Here the personal becomes the political and in the breach between Aziz and his English "friends," Forster foreshadows the eventual end of the Raj. --Alix Wilber

Forster's finest novel, but this electronic version is plagued with scanning transcription errors.
By Jim Ryan
In many ways this is my favorite of Forster's novels. His ironic narrative style is never better, starting with describing Chandrapore as "Edged rather than washed by the river Ganges..." The characters are complex and variable people who often despite their own better instincts are impelled and animated by external forces. Forster does an exceptional job of portraying the divisions that define daily life in inter-War India. There are difficult divisions between the ruling British and their Indian subjects; between Muslims and Hindus; and between the various social castes within each of the groups. Nearly 100 years later, it's a sobering perspective on the Subcontinent.

Unfortunately, this scanned digital edition contains dozens of OCR typographical errors that even a cursory proofreading could have corrected. "The" is repeatedly rendered as "tile" and many other issues, and the effect is very distracting. Hopefully the publishers will see fit to correct the transcription errors in this outstanding novel.

Avoid this version
By Koogan
Avoid this edition. As mentioned in another review, this is a poor version. The strangest thing of all is that what appears to be the introduction is actually a very negative commentary about the book. This "introduction" essentially says this a bad book and not worth reading. I got a refund, but it would probably be best if Amazon removed the item completely.

Don't Pass this Great Story by because of Poor Digitalizing and Don't bother with the Intro!
By Isabella R
This is hoping to not scare people away from this great book….
A Passage to India

YES, this book has significant problems in it’s digitalized form, but if it is the ONLY way you can read it….skip the intro and read the story in a spirit of forgiveness for the poor format.
By all means if you can find a better copy, do so;

But do not miss Forster’s insightful story-telling that gives so much understanding to the human experience of colonialism (both from the English side and the Indian side).

Fascinating insight into colonialism and English-Indian relationships through very personal encounters. The microcosm of the story will give you layer after layer of understanding into this period in history. If you watched the movie Ghandi and think you ‘know’ enough about colonial India, you have cheated yourself. Getting to know the characters Dr Aziz, Cyril Fielding, Mrs. Moore, Ronny Heaslop and Narayan Godbole gives clarity to the “muddle” that is colonialism.
And BTW, if you have seen the movie you have not experienced ‘A Passage to India’. Yes, the events follow very closely the book, but it is missing the soul of the STORY.

Amateur quality with grammatical and technical errors, and very poor explanations of concepts
By David Scarlett
An extremely amateur piece of writing. Problems include numerous grammatical errors, technical errors (such as describing the NULL value as a data type, and several coding errors), mentioning terms or concepts that have not yet been explained (such as primary keys, dropping tables) or in some cases are never explained (such as STORAGE clauses), and formatting code examples so that they are barely legible. The author has a large series of similarly titled books on many different topics, all with large numbers of suspiciously generic 5 star reviews which push them to the top of search results.

An amateur effort at best. I get the sense that the author started ...
By A. Pierce
This book is...well, disappointing to be honest. Grammatical errors and typos abound for one thing. For another thing, the sample syntax uses elements from previous topics in ways that were never covered or explained. This is especially true in later chapters. There are no exercises and no projects that tie multiple concepts together. In short, it's poorly written and incomplete. An amateur effort at best.

I get the sense that the author started out with a nice vision, put together an ambitious outline, and then got overwhelmed and burned out writing the first draft. So he just submitted the first draft to the publisher. And the publisher didn't even run it by a copy editor. Heck, it may even be self-published. Anyway, if you couldn't already tell, my advice is don't waste your money with this one.

( For what it's worth, I also bought a copy of Head First SQL at the same time. The contrast is night and day, boys and girls. Head First is much more money, but I don't feel stupid for buying that one.)

Save your money!
By DaveR
Yeah so I'm really feeling embarrassed and a bit angry about this purchase. The positive reviews here are fake and I didn't take the time to look closely at them before wasting my money on this "book". This is a self-published pamphlet (print-on-demand) that isn't much more than the first week's class notes from a SQL101 class. Don't believe the positive reviews, spend your money on a book with some depth, and my lesson is to look more closely at the timing and structure of positive reviews in the future. Amazon needs to up their game with fake reviews, I got caught on this one.

The Blind Contessa's New Machine: A Novel, by Carey Wallace

Carolina Fantoni, a young contessa in nineteenth-century Italy, is going blind. But nobody believes her: neither her parents, nor her fianc, the town’s most sought-after bachelor. Only her friend Turri, the eccentric local inventor, understands. But as darkness erases her world, Carolina discovers one place she can still see―in her dreams. In them, she can not only see, but fly, exploring new worlds in her own mind.

Losing her sight isolates Carolina. Even writing letters with pen and ink proves almost impossible―until Turri invents a new machine: the world’s first typewriter. His gift ignites a passionate love affair that will mark both of their lives forever.

Based on the true story of the blind woman who inspired the invention of the typewriter, The Blind Contessa’s New Machine is an iridescent jewel of a novel that celebrates the triumph of the imagination and proves that love is the mother of invention.

From Publishers Weekly
This charming and refreshingly modest debut hinges on a romantic triangle consisting of a blind contessa, her aristocratic husband, and an eccentric inventor. As Carolina Fantoni and Pietro prepare for their wedding in early 19th-century Italy, she tells her handsome, well-born fianc that she is going blind. Like her family, he doesn't take her seriously, and only Turri, Carolina's friend and married neighbor, believes her. While Pietro engages in less than lofty pursuits, Turri and Carolina continue to meet on Carolina's father's property, and Carolina's creeping blindness inspires Turri to invent a machine she can use to write messages. His invention—a typewriter—sparks an affair that could have far-reaching consequences for them both. Wallace has a smooth style and a sure hand in combining near tragedy with whimsy, whether she's detailing Carolina and Pietro's social circle, the state of scientific knowledge, or the progression of Carolina's blindness. Secondary characters, including Carolina's not-so loyal servant girl, Liza, are sketched with hints of a darker, deeper psychology. Despite its relative brevity, this is a work of surprising insight, humor, and heart. (July)

From Booklist
Wallace's debut may be slender, but it is in no way slight. This shimmering historical, grounded faintly in fact, is elevated by deft touches of romantic mysticism. When Carolina, an indulged but independent early nineteenth century Italian contessa, realizes she is going blind, the only one who believes her is Turri, a local handyman and her childhood friend and confidante. After her marriage to a provincial aristocrat, her vision deteriorates rapidly. Desperate to hold onto the beauty of the physical world, she realizes that she can still see in her dreams and creates a vivid alternate reality. Meanwhile, Turri invents a machine that enables her to continue to communicate with him. As the “writing machine” binds them closer together, a bittersweet affair threatens to tear them apart forever. Writing with the assurance and the clarity of a seasoned author, Wallace crafts a seemingly simple, but ultimately iridescent, love story. --Margaret Flanagan

Quintessential prose floats over the world of the sightless
By Holly Weiss
Carolina, a newly engaged woman surrounded by the beauty of a 19th century Italian villa, revels in her daydreams until she realizes she is going blind. Her family worries if their villa's shady garden can sustain a grove of lemon trees while Carolina observes rather than fears her encroaching blindness.

Ironically, Carey Wallace's evocative prose is awash with images that invite the eye to retrace many a sentence. The author then masterfully invites us into the world of the sightless with descriptions of the other senses spilling over each page. "The woods chatter." "The insect's strong body beat against her eyelids." "Sugar. She lifted her finger from her tongue." Under Wallace's pen, Carolina experiences the world so clearly, we are stunned to discover that she needs a writing machine. I need not comment about the love story in the plot as other reviewers have. Frankly, plot was quite secondary in this reader's mind to the perception of how well Carolina lived in her dark world. When her other senses do not give her enough, she wills her dreams to take her to places where she can envision what she loves.

This extraordinary debut novel moved me with its insight and eloquence. I disagree with the review that cited blindness as being the central idea in the book. I found the novel remarkably illuminating and an absolute delight to read.

Beautiful and heart-wise
By N. Ferguson R.
Timeless emotional resonance, well-drawn characters we can understand and care about, a unique sense of place and time in early 19th century Italy... The Blind Contessa's New Machine is a beautiful story, a psychologically elegant romance, and a deep pleasure.

I finished this slim volume (just over 200 pages) in one sitting, reading into the early morning hours. When I closed the book the first words that came to my mind to explain how I feel about it to others were these: "This book makes me believe in the power of art (literature) again."

While it took me a few hours to accept the conclusion, I now think the author's resolution of the story was true-to-life, more honest than the desires of readers like me.

An entrancing and heart-wise first novel.

Dancers in the dark
By Kieri
A lovely first novel - bittersweet historical romance tempered with a hefty dose of magic realism. Hard to believe it is a first novel, as Carey Wallace weaves gorgeous mental tapestries with every word (the story clocks in at about 200 pages, and Wallace really does make every word work for its space). As Carolina's blindness progresses, the details become sharper - every last sight is documented, then every smell, every sound, every touch...

I would almost rather recommend this book to fantasy fans then historical romance fans. There's something very Patricia McKillip about this novel.
