Smith's book offers a fascinating rethinking of Reconstruction and the Age of Emancipation by looking at the battles over "unfree labor" that took place in California from the Gold Rush through Chinese Exclusion. She shows that California was anything but a "free state" and that its diversity of labor systems mattered on the ground in California as well as in national policymaking.

Great Information

This book provided a lot of good information on California during the Civil War Period and beyond and how its view on race, color, and ethnicity shaped the national debate. My only caveat would be that the editors should have looked more close at the text. A lot of repeat information. So, once you recognize it is a story you read before, just skip over it. Could have saved at least a 1/4 of the book. However, it is worth a read if you are a history buff.

Excellent research source

This is an excellent book for those interested in getting an overview of IR. The book summarizes all the important milestones of IR up to 1999 (There are 852 references in the bibliography!). The writing is concise yet eloquent. The authors try to cover as much ground as possible, providing a gold-mine of information comparing the pros and cons of the various types of implementation. However, I believe that due to the breadth of the techniques covered, some of the explanations for the algorithms were rather brief and not very illuminating. But no worries, there are ample references to point you back to the writings of the orignal authors so you can get right back on track.

A very good approach to IR from a computer science perspective. Well organized and easy to read although some chapter could be dry for a novice. Excellent cover of visualization techniques, digital libraries, and web searching from a conceptual point of view. The reference list is large enough (and up-to-date) to keep you busy reading more material for several weeks.

Excellent as a textbook and a practical guide

I used this book as a textbook in a course on information storage and retrieval that I took a few years back, and it is still my favorite book on the subject. It explains the concepts clearly yet has all of the necessary mathematical and algorithmic details needed to work with the subject matter.
Chapter one just acts as a guide to the rest of the book. The book is basically divided into four parts: text IR, human-computer interfacing for IR, multimedia IR, and applications of IR. The part on text IR is best for beginners trying to learn the overall subject of IR, and consists of chapters 2 through 9. Chapter 2 is a long and important chapter that introduces fundamental concepts in IR and lays foundations for later chapters. Models for "ranking" documents based on queries are presented, including the boolean, vector, probabilistic, and fuzzy models. Chapter 3 is far less technical than chapter 2 and focuses on evaluation of IR models. Chapter 4 is an introduction to query languages, which are necessary for the elegant presentation of complex queries. Chapter 5 deals with query operations, which is the transformation of queries from simple keywords into weighted sets of terms and also includes user feedback. As in previous chapters, there is quite a bit of mathematics involved. Chapter 6 is devoted to text languages such as HTML and SGML since the user might refer to the structure of a document in his/her query, and that structure must be defined somewhere. Chapter 7 is about operations on documents themselves for the purpose of simplifying them for quick search. Thus, it is important as a time saver to eliminate common words such as "the" and also to reduce words to their grammatical roots. The potentially large size of document collections requires special indexing techniques for efficient retrieval. This is the subject of Chapter 8. Query processing can be further accelerated by using the parallel and distributed IR techniques discussed in Chapter 9, which concludes the book's discussion of text IR.
Chapter 10 is a stand-alone chapter on HCI for IR that discusses the design of user interfaces that assist the user in forming a query and current approaches for visualization of large data sets.
Multimedia IR is discussed in chapters 11 and 12. Models and query languages for office and medical information systems are discussed in Chapter 11. Efficient indexing and searching of multimedia objects is discussed in Chapter 12.
The final three chapters of the book are about the applications of IR. There is a chapter each about searching the web, bibliographic systems, and digital libraries.
The chapter on text languages is starting to show its age, as are the chapters on IR applications at the end of the book. The chapters on algorithms, and particularly the algorithmic portions of the chapters on text IR cause this book to remain a worthwhile read. There is quite a bit of mathematics used in this book, and probability theory in particular. Thus, the reader should already be familiar with probability theory and the basics of pattern recognition to get the most from this book.

About the Author

James P. Leary is a professor of Folklore and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he also serves as director of the Folklore Program and co-director of the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures. A native of northern Wisconsin, he has conducted field research on the folklore of diverse cultural groups in America's Upper Midwest for more than thirty years and is author of Minnesota Polka, Yodeling in Dairyland, Wisconsin Folklore, and So Ole Says to Lena: Folk Humor of the Upper Midwest.

If you're interested in regional music, get this.

This is a fascinating account of the little known regional music of the upper-Midwest. The Ramblers are the focus here, but this is really an in-depth study of the scene that produced them, from Slim Jim to Bob Andresen's "Jack Pine" guitar, and beyond. The Goose Island Ramblers were one of a kind, combining (seemingly) effortless mastery of multiple instruments, musical styles from around the world (Scandinavia, Russia, Germany, Poland, etc.) and the U.S. (folk, country, Hawaiian, western swing), and a great repertoire of songs familiar and obscure. The only reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5 is Leary's tendency towards academic jargon (terms like "syncretic"). Not exactly my cup of tea, but it really doesn't interfere too much with the pleasure the story. If you've never heard the Ramblers, you need to check them out. Almost all of their recordings (with the exception of the extremely rare "Syttende Mai in Stoughton") are still available from the Cuca Records (their original label) website. While you're there, check out the other great releases. Cuca Records founder James Kirchstein (who still runs the site) amassed an amazing, beautifully recorded chronicle of the regional music of the upper-Midwest (folk, country western, ethnic, garage rock - even circus music) in the 60s and 70s.

Mediocre

I'm working on a project about Curie, so I've read several biographies about her thus far. This book isn't absolutely terrible, but I think it handles Curie poorly. It underexplains much about her life and motivations, gives little due to the science behind her work, and goes out of its way to make her "inner world" excessively dramatic. Curie's story is amazing and fascinating, but this book sacrifices explanatory detail and historical context in favor of an emotionally simplified (and thus more boring) version of the person. Even the title is misleading -- Curie was dedicated to her work and slightly reclusive, but she was hardly an obsessive personality.

I encourage you to please check out the longer but much more engrossing biography by Susan Quinn (titled Marie Curie: A Life (Radcliffe Biography Series)), which provides the historical and scientific context necesssary to make Curie's story really come alive.

A Fascinating Biography

Obsessive Genius is an utterly fascinating portrait of a hallowed and difficult subject. If you are a fan of Goldsmith's work, (I am) you will immediately see that she is the perfect person to give Curie the complexity and dimension she deserves --as a scientist and as a woman. It's a short book which is by turns moving, informative, and intriguingly unexpected. I couldn't put it down.

Captivating

I learned of this book in the magazine section of my Sunday newspaper. I strongly doubted that a nonfiction book would be able to hold my interest for long as they can be so dry and tedious, but the topic sounded interesting, the review was promising and as I am a huge historical fiction reader I thought it might be worth a try. I am so grateful that I ran across that recommendation or I would have missed out on a real gem!

The story grabbed me in right from page one. I couldn't wait to find some free time to be able to get back to reading! While definitely written as nonfiction, the story at times reads like a simple novel with short dialogue, letter excerpts and diary entries. These personal touches add a wonderful element to the book. The scientific explanations were presented very simplistically and were easy enough to understand. They too, added a wonderful and important element to the story.

Marie Curie's life was fascinating: a woman of rare intelligence and genius, she was also plagued by severe depression (especially after the loss of her beloved Pierre) and faced the constant struggle to prove herself and receive her much deserved credit in what was a very male-dominated field. Yet despite these struggles, her devotion to science and her world-changing discoveries never diminished; they enveloped her very soul. I must admit that at times, when reading about her accomplishments and the ease at which science came to her, I felt alittle inadequate and less than intelligent. She was an inspiration!

I was very happy to discover the wonderful coincidence that while I was reading this book, the anniversary of Marie Curie's discovery of radium and radioactivity took place. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in science, history, women's rights, medicine or just plain life!

History and Fiction, All Rolled Up Into One Magnificent Story!

I became curious about reading this book after learning that the main character was somewhat designed after that of Temple Houston, Sam Houston's son. I had no expectations, and oh my - how delighted I was to discover this wonderful author! How can you go wrong with beautiful writing and an exciting story, set over a period of years where so many changes took place in this Oklahoma territory? It is a great story about a family of unforgettable characters, who move to a town in Oklahoma during the late 1800's. I highly recommend this book for those who are interested in this time period, and those that just love a great story.

Language has been a primary element in visual art since the 1960s -- in the form of printed texts, painted signs, words on the wall, recorded speech, and more. In Words to Be Looked At, Liz Kotz traces this practice to its beginnings, examining works of visual art, poetry, and experimental music created in and around New York City from 1958 to 1968. In many of these works, language has been reduced to an object nearly emptied of meaning. Robert Smithson described a 1967 exhibition at the Dwan Gallery as consisting of "Language to be Looked at and/or Things to be Read." Kotz considers the paradox of artists living in a time of social upheaval who use words but chose not to make statements with them. Kotz traces the proliferation of text in 1960s art to the use of words in musical notation and short performance scores. She makes two works the "bookends" of her study: the "text score" for John Cage's legendary 1952 work 4'33" -- written instructions directing a performer to remain silent during three arbitrarily determined time brackets -- and Andy Warhol's notorious a: a novel -- twenty-four hours of endless talk, taped and transcribed -- published by Grove Press in 1968. Examining works by artists and poets including Vito Acconci, Carl Andre, George Brecht, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Jackson Mac Low, and Lawrence Weiner, Kotz argues that the turn to language in 1960s art was a reaction to the development of new recording and transmission media: words took on a new materiality and urgency in the face of magnetic sound, videotape, and other emerging electronic technologies. I've been reading Liz Kotz's book for many months and I still haven't plumbed its depths all the way to the bottom, however what I have made of it, I love. In its range and in the brilliance of its insights it reminds me a bit of Pamela Lee's Chronophobia book, which likewise was always coming and throwing delightful curves at the reader, though Kotz goes beyond Lee, or so I feel, in the arcane angles from which she pursues her subjects. She also has a lot more humor than Lee, which is all to the good. Kotz' thesis is--well, I can't boil it down here on Amazon since her arguments, like the mythical Hydra, are multi-headed, but she takes on the donnee of much contemporary art writing, that in the 1950s and 1960s language made enormous and telling inroads into the world of visual art, and she tries to account for this `turn towards language' by pursuing various cultural and historical markers. Simultaneously she shows that the process itself (the `turn') devolved into a `re-turn,' and the art became conscious of itself as being embroiled in a genre-churning mash-up. So there's all this activity, and some of it looks inward--and coupled with the social revolutions of the 1960s, there's a lot of ways in which anyone trying to make sense of all this material could go wrong, and Kotz evades every trap. You feel like cheering for her to succeed the way one cheered on D.B. Cooper's getaway after that hijack caper.

Book begins with a consideration of John Cage's enigmatic 4'33" and its three scores. Kotz has a lot of fun about which one of the three is most canonical; in the end, we are led to agreeing with her that it doesn't matter, but that the resistance of critics to the so-called 1960 version is largely due to the fact that it is represented not in conventional musical terms, nor even by the familiar plunging graphics, but in words--humble but actual words (this is the one with the "Tacet"/"Silence" interchange that always strikes me as monastic. In any case working her way through conflicting claims, Kotz arrives at one of her most striking points, that after 1952, duration becomes one of the building blocks of art. Soon, Sol LeWitt is claiming to see that the idea becomes the machine that makes art, so that torques a little to reveal that the event is the machine that makes art. She tracks the progress of artists as different as Ashbery and Acconci through the 1960s, and winds up with a dazzling look at Warhol's novel "a" as the ultimate 60s durational work, a "project that must be undergone to be understood." Along the way she has a ball with the contemporary critics of "a," and I always love reading that sort of thing--Michael Sherry performed a similar analysis of contemporary reviews of Samuel Barber's Vanessa and Antony and Cleopatra in last year's Gay Artists in Modern American Culture: An Imagined Conspiracy. Really some of the same knuckleheads were involved in tearing apart both "a" and the "empty-mind" operas of Barber.

Hmm, makes me afraid that 40 years from now, the scholars of the future will be pouncing on all the 1 star reviews I've written for Amazon, and showing that the works of art I hated will be universally held up in 2049 as works of genius and I'm a fool. I know it's going to happen, and knowing I'll be dead by the time that happens doesn't make me less afraid for myself!

You Go Girl

TAKEN, the second book in Christine Pope’s “Djinn Wars” series begins right after the first book leaves off and the book wastes no time before Jessica Monroe embarks on a dangerous mission to save Jace/Jasreel, the supernatural being she has come to love in his human form.
TAKEN deepens the mythology surrounding Pope’s djinn, and it’s an original take on a very old form of supernatural being. The book also sets larger events in motion as we meet other survivors, another “Chosen” and learn more about what the survivalists in Los Alamos are up to.
There’s a lot of action in this book, which reminded me a bit of Pope’s sci fi series, the GAIA CONSORTIUM where the romance in the book is set against an increasingly complex world of interplanetary political intrigue.
Jessica is a sympathetic heroine and in this book she really steps up—not just for herself and her lover but for the others she meets in this book. We know that she’ll face even greater trials before the series concludes but we feel confident that this newly empowered woman will find the strength to do what’s necessary.
This is a great second book for a series—continuing the story without any loss of energy.

Fast-paced adventure with complex relationships - Christine Pope at her best

(Spoilers for Chosen:) At the end of Chosen, Jessica finds out about the djinn: that most of them want to destroy all humans, and that about a thousand of them have chosen mates out of those immune to djinn-created virus: The Heat. With only a moment to reconcile all her new knowledge with the man she has come to love, he (Jasreel) is whisked away by men with Hummers and a dangerous black box. Though Jessica was a little more than ordinary in the first book, she overcomes her “reluctant heroine” status to meet the challenge of rescuing her beloved.

A romance writer in many genres, Pope excels in juggling the various relationship dynamics in the book. From the friendship between Jessica and fellow-Chosen Evony to interactions with the paramilitary group of human Immune who have captured two djinn, each relationship is unique and important. Of course, the romance is the most important part, and it is both earnest and magical.

After the somewhat drawn-out nature of Chosen, the pacing of Taken is everything I hoped it would be. It balances the minutia of the post-apocalyptic life with the urgency of knowing that there are two sets of enemies out there... something that becomes dangerously apparent as the book builds to a close to end on a bit of a cliffhanger and we anticipate Fallen, coming in early June.

(I was given a review copy with the understanding I'd write an honest review, and this book earned the five-star rating I couldn't give the first book in the series.)

It was good and different and left me wanting more

I read the first book of the four books and was pleasantly surprised. It was good and different and left me wanting more. Subsequently, I read all four books. It is a very unusual story that kind of leaves your mind wondering if something so strange as what goes on in these books can really happen. In any event, the story is well written and thoroughly enjoyable.
